GENERAL PURPOSE AND SCOPE OF THE POSITION:
The Student Affairs Fellow position is 2-3 year assignment designed to provide an early-career professional exposure to student success functions at the community college level. The position will provide hands-on experience in academic advising, student support, career development and program coordination. This role supports student engagement initiatives across both Student Affairs and Career Services, with a focus on the academic and career advising journey, student engagement in career readiness activities, and retention/success coaching. Embedded in the role are robust learning opportunities, exposure to varied departments, including advising, retention and career services, and a strong recommendation for the professional upon the completion of a 2- 3 year appointment.

At the conclusion of the assignment, professionals will have comprehensive understanding of student development at the community college level and will be prepared to advance to their next step in their higher education career.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPERIENCES:

85% of the Student Affairs Fellow’s time will be spent in on-the-job experiences across various student success functions, including:

● Manage academic advising and career coaching case load in a manner that promotes retention, persistence, and student success through proactive interactions and interventions

● Demonstrate strong commitment to student development and success through advocacy, positive attitude, adaptability, approachability, problem solving, and support.

● Monitor student progress through academic completion plans, regular meetings, communications, interventions, assessments, and data collection

● Maintain current knowledge of the institution's academic programs, curriculum, practices and academic and student policies

● Support the implementation of the Career Development Portfolio (CDP) by promoting awareness, events, and milestone completion and follow up on student engagement.

● Contribute to special projects aligned with the Curriculum to Careers initiative and career education integration efforts.

● Demonstrate developmental academic advising that assists students in clarifying personal and academic career goals through the use of appropriate student development, human development, and student learning theories

● Assist students in gaining a basic understanding of the College's registration process and processes that need to be completed prior to the beginning of each semester

● Present to new and current students in a group setting over a variety of topics including academic skills, career guidance, student support resources and other advising and retention focused content.

● Assist with coordination and logistics for student facing events, including college and career fairs, classroom presentations, and recruiting events.

● Collaborate on marketing and outreach strategies for career programming using digital media, flyers, classroom visits, and student org connections.

LEARNING AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT:

15% of Student Affairs Fellow’s time will be spent in professional development including:

● Professional mentorship with a senior-level campus leader

● Professional development opportunities in the form of job shadowing, community engagement, and informational interviews with leaders such as the Chancellor and the Campus Board Chair.

● Exposure to campus and college professional development opportunities

Due to the extent of the training and development invested in fellows, there is an expectation to complete at least two years with the option of a third year. The fellow position is not renewable after the third year, but candidates will have options to apply for other roles at the College.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Minimum Qualifications:

● Bachelor’s Degree required. Recent graduates or graduate students welcome to apply.

● Demonstrated interest in student development, higher education, career services or related fields.

● Excellent computer skills including extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office.

● Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and communication skills.

● Ability to manage multiple priorities and work independently in a collaborative environment.

● Ability to promote an inclusive environment that reflects the broad diversity and backgrounds represented by our students and employees and in which every individual feels respected and valued.

SALARY:

The starting salary for this position is $44,800.

This is a temporary position.
