About the Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled Writing Center Assistant Director to join our team. In this role, you will leverage your professional skills to support Ivy Tech Indianapolis Tutoring Services by providing strategic leadership, supervision, and tutoring for the Writing Center, which offers individualized tutoring support at all points of the writing process for all written assignments across the curricula. This position will manage the Writing Center’s day-to-day operations, staff scheduling and evaluation, data analysis, and marketing of services. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of coaching writer development, championing customer service experiences across multiple modalities, managing or mentoring team members, building collaborative partnerships with diverse stakeholders, and a passion for delivering outstanding results in a dynamic environment.

Required Skills & Competencies:
Leadership & Management Skills: Ability to develop and implement team goals and delegate tasks appropriately in support of both departmental projects and team members’ growth. Proven experience developing and maintaining meaningful partnerships with stakeholders across an organization.
Technical Skills: Proficiency in composing rhetorically-savvy texts, with hands-on experience tutoring, teaching, or coaching others through learning and skill development processes. Proficiency with computer and web applications on various devices, including Windows PCs, MacBooks, and Google Chromebooks. Proficiency with Microsoft and Google Suites, Zoom, and email and chat applications.
Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze data, identify and prioritize patterns, and provide data-driven solutions.

Communication Skills: Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate ideas clearly to diverse audiences, listen actively, provide patient and non-judgmental feedback, and build positive rapport with others. Must be comfortable teaching and communicating information to large groups and interpersonally in one-on-one or small-group settings. Must be comfortable facilitating empowering coaching conversations as well as de-escalation and/or conflict resolution conversations.
Problem-Solving: Ability to think critically, make decisions independently, and solve complex problems in a timely manner.
Teamwork: Proven experience in collaborating effectively with diverse teams to achieve common goals. Ability to scale collaborative teamwork up, down, and across an organization.
Project Management: Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines, and track progress in a fast-paced environment. Proven experience taking initiative, responding to evolving needs, and helping team members effectively navigate emerging change.

Preferred Additional Skills:
• Experience teaching or tutoring writing, rhetoric & composition, English as a second language, or other communication-based coursework at the college level.
• Experience supervising, managing, or mentoring team members in a professional setting.
• Ability to demonstrate a positive attitude of approachability and adaptability.

Key Responsibilities:
The following is not to be construed as an exhaustive list. Other duties logically associated with this position may be assigned. All responsibilities will be conducted within the parameters of the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), other applicable regulatory requirements, and professional standards.

• Ensure that students are receiving consistent, quality writing tutoring services by training, supervising, and evaluating a team of writing and ESOL tutors.
• Assist Director of Library & Tutoring Services with operational and administrative support, including developing staff schedules, promoting tutoring services to the college community, and managing monthly and semesterly tutoring data to improve departmental processes and procedures that positively impact student success, retention, and completion.
• Collaborate with Director of Library & Tutoring Services to ensure that marketing materials are up-to-date and circulated to relevant stakeholders.
• Support planning and outcomes assessment efforts within the department and participate in other campus planning efforts.
• Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams—including faculty, staff, and students—utilizing transparent and empathetic communication to help elevate departmental services and contribute to team initiatives.
• Use established Writing Center pedagogy and protocols to tutor students one-on-one at various points of the writing process, working on written documents that span a range of subjects and genres. Thoroughly document tutoring data.
• Apply advanced problem-solving skills to prioritize exceptional customer service, troubleshoot, and resolve student questions and inquiries. Serve as a mediator for conflict resolution as needed.
• Collaboratively design, develop, and coordinate a broad range of teaching and learning tools to meet co-curricular needs, including but not limited to web-based tutorials, instructional videos, and subject-specific workshops.
• Serves as a member of the Statewide Tutoring Group.
• Maintain an understanding of writing and tutoring pedagogical trends and apply relevant skills in support of student success.

Education & Experience:

  • This position requires a bachelor’s degree in a relevant or related field. (ie. Rhetoric & Composition, English, Communication, Writing, Teaching English as a Second Language).
  • This position also requires 2-3 years of experience demonstrating the core practical skills required for this role. 
  • A proven track record of facilitating writing pedagogy best practices, championing customer service/problem-solving, strategic goal-setting/assessment, and prior experience managing dynamic teams will be prioritized.
