History

In 2003, Ivy Tech Community College Bloomington developed a strategic plan for the region that includes the goal “embrace and promote community service that involves our students, faculty, staff, and facilities.” That goal created the concept of a “Center for Civic Engagement” through which we are developing and incorporating opportunities for community service in our curriculum for students as well as in professional development activities for faculty and staff.

The Highlight of each academic year is an event focused on the broad issue of community service. The event, modeled after the Bowen Institute for Political Participation at Ball State University, draws speakers to share insights with students, employees and community members on the value to local communities of community service, volunteerism, and active political participation.

After the death of Governor Frank O’Bannon in 2003, the regional campus decided to name our annual event for him to commemorate his years of public service, his dedication to education, and particularly his legacy of Indiana’s community college system. The O’Bannon Institute for Community Service engages panelists and presenters in the areas of community service, volunteerism, and political participation. The event is incorporated in student assignment activity, and is open to public participation as well.
