“I was a fire department captain, but I wanted to enhance my skills. Ivy Tech gave me a higher skill level in fire science as well as for advancement. There was practical lab work in fire prevention, inspections, firefighting apparatus. But the math, psychology, speech and other classes were just as helpful. When you move up in the officer ranks, you need knowledge to manage other people, write reports and handle that type of responsibility. I’ve recommended the Ivy Tech program and had several of the people in the department go through it, but any young people who are considering a firefighting career will also get a well-rounded exposure to what it requires to be a professional firefighter.”
