Assessment Testing Students seeking admission in one of Ivy Tech’s programs of study or wishing to enroll in credit classes must first take the COMPASS or ASSET initial course placement assessment. The test is designed to identify a student’s basic skill levels in math, reading, and language usage. New students may need to complete all assessments in math, reading, and language usage or any combination of the three. COMPASS is an un-timed, user-friendly assessment given in our computer labs. Since COMPASS is un-timed, the length of testing will vary depending upon the individual student. ASSET is a timed, paper and pencil assessment. ASSET may take anywhere from 1 - 3.5 hours to complete.

The assessment requirement can be waived if the students has:
•SAT scores of 460 or better in both math and verbal no older than four years.
•ACT scores of 19 or better in writing, reading, and math no older than four years
•received a "C" or better in college-level English and Math courses no older than 10 years from an accredited institution.
•earned a minimum of an associate degree at an accredited institute.

Assessment procedure

3. Select a test date (test dates below)
4. Call to make appointment! Contact Student Affairs
5. Mark the student orientation date on your calendar!

1. Fill out the Application for Admission.
2. Request an official copy of your high school transcript or GED transcript.
3. If you have earned previous college credits, be sure to have an official transcript sent to Ivy Tech for evaluation of your credits before signing up for COMPASS or ASSET. It is your responsibility to have your transcripts sent to our campus.
4. Meet with an admission advisor. Contact Student Affairs
5. You must have a COMPASS or ASSET pass to be allowed in the testing lab. You will receive a pass after you have completed the admission process (steps 1,2,3 and 4). An academic advisor will be assigned to you once you have completed the admission process.
6. Sign-up for the assessment you prefer by contacting the Student Affairs office
7. Submit your assessment pass to the test administrator at the time of your scheduled test time.
8. You will receive your placement scores the same day you take the assessment.
9. After receiving your assessment scores, make an appointment with your academic advisor and register for classes. Be sure to take your scores with you to your advising appointment.
10. Assessment scores are “good” for two years.
