Admission to Ivy Tech Community College requires...

  1. Read About Ivy Tech Southeast. We have three campus locations, keep this in mind as you choose the one that best fits your needs.
  1. Print the contact information at the bottom of this page. The contacts listed are specific to the information on this page.
  1. Meet with a Student Affairs counselor to discuss your interests and educational options at Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome.
  1. APPLY! Complete a free Application for Admission (online application or mail-in application). Request an official copy of your high school transcript or GED scores ( transcript request form). If you have previously completed college coursework at a regionally accredited college or university, have an official transcript sent to us for assessment waiver and transfer purposes. As part of the admissions process, all degree-seeking students must have this information on file in the Student Affairs Office.
  1. Many types of financial aid are available such as grants, scholarships, and student loans. Students interested in applying for aid must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). If you have questions about financial aid, set up an appointment with the Financial Aid Office as soon as possible.
  1. Degree-seeking students must take and courses-only students may need to take an assessment (COMPASS or ASSET) test. This is Ivy Tech’s assessment instrument that will assist you and your academic advisor in making appropriate course selections. Contact the Student Affairs Office to sign up for a testing session. There is no charge to take the COMPASS or ASSET.
Special Note for Distance Education Students: If you do not live near an Ivy Tech Campus, you may make arrangements for taking the assessment at a college near you. For information on taking our Admission assessment at another college please contact Jan Dykstra of ACT at 319-337-1376. ACT will locate the closest institution that provides either the COMPASS or ASSET. When you contact the host institution, let them know that you are a distance education student and need to complete the assessment for admission requirements at your home institution. There may or may not be a minimal charge. Send your results to the appropriate Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana Campus.
  1. After taking the assessment test, make an appointment to meet with an academic advisor to register for classes by filling out the course reservation form. This is a good time to ask questions about your program area, too. Degree-seeking students must meet with an academic advisor prior to registration. Courses-only students are also encouraged to meet with an advisor or a Student Affairs counselor.
  1. Take the course reservation form you completed with your advisor to Student Affairs where your course information will be entered into the computer system and fees assessed. If you are receiving financial aid, check with the Financial Aid Office to make sure that all of your paperwork is in order and allow at least one week for processing of aid.
  1. When you are ready to pay your tuition/fees or charge to your financial aid award, pick up your course reservation form from Student Affairs and take it to the Bookstore/Business Office. You are not officially registered until you complete this step and payment arrangements have been made.
  1. Buy your books. The campus Bookstore/Business Office will provide the necessary books and supplies for your courses. You may pay for your books and supplies or charge against your financial aid award. Always get your books prior to the first class session. Read a few chapters ahead if possible so that you will be prepared for your first class.
  1. Attend a New Student Orientation Session. Orientation sessions are presented for all new students prior to the beginning of every semester. The sessions provide information concerning policies, procedures, and student life opportunities at the campus. Contact Student Affairs to schedule a session.
  1. Attend every class. There are hundreds of reasons why you might consider skipping class. Our experience shows, however, that the single best predictor of class performance is attendance. The general rule is “be in class whenever possible.” If you must miss a class, make sure to contact your instructor as soon as possible to explain your situation and to talk about making up the missed assignment.
  1. Last, but not least, contact your advisor, or the Student Affairs Office, whenever you have a question. Don’t wait for a question to become a problem. We want you to be successful and are here to help!
