IVY TECH-ELKHART ANNOUNCES NEW LOCAL HUMAN SERVICES PROGRAM

SOUTH BEND, IND. (October 25, 2007) – Ivy Tech Community College will be offering introductory courses in Human Services at the Elkhart campus starting in January, according to program chair Joann Phillips. The courses include Introduction to Human Services and Helping Relationship Techniques, from 9 a.m. to noon on rotating Saturday mornings, January 14-May 10.

The courses will be hybrid, which means that students spend half the time they normally do in the classroom, with extra work assigned outside of class. “This way, students can get a good start on their associate degree in Human Services by attending classes just one Saturday morning a week,” Phillips explained. “The hybrid format gives students more flexibility in achieving their education.”

Students are now able to complete a one-year technical certificate or two-year associate degree in Human Services entirely by taking classes face-to-face in the classroom and via distance education. The program offers specialty concentration areas in mental health, substance abuse, gerontology and correctional rehabilitation. In addition to the introductory courses, the Human Services program includes courses in interviewing and assessment skills, group techniques and behavior techniques, in addition to the specialty-related courses and general education core requirements. Two internships are included in the associate degree program to provide practical clinical skills. Upon completion, students can enter a career in a social service agency and have the option of applying to a four-year college or university to continue their education.

Registration is now in progress for the spring term which begins January 14, and advising appointments or more information are available by calling Phillips at (574) 289-7001, ext. 6372 (jphillips148@ivytech.edu).
