Ivy Tech Community College remains Indiana’s most affordable college

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.Ivy Tech Community College’s State Board of Trustees approved a 3.9 percent tuition increase each year for the next two academic years.   This is lowest increase of any college or university across the state, keeping Ivy Tech Community College the most affordable choice for higher education in Indiana.

For the 2007-2008 academic year, in-state tuition will be $91.30 per credit hour, plus a $40 per semester technology fee. This increases the cost for full-time students by $53.25 per semester in 2007-08 and by $55.50 per semester in 2008-09, when the credit hour cost will be $95.00. Students taking eight credit hours each term, the average number taken by an Ivy Tech student, will pay $28.40 more per semester in 2007-08 and $29.60 per semester in 2008-09.

Ivy Tech has historically been Indiana’s most affordable choice for post secondary education. A report by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education shows Ivy Tech Community College tuition and fees in 2005-2006 was equal to 3.7 percent of the median family income for a family of four, a percentage that has only increased by 0.2 percent since 1987 and is the lowest in the state by 1.4 percent.

Ivy Tech Community College students can earn an associate degree for under $6,000 in tuition. Coupled with the fact that Ivy Tech’s credits transfer to many colleges and universities throughout state, students can experience tremendous savings by attending Ivy Tech for two years and transferring to a four-year institution for the completion of a bachelor’s degree.

“Ivy Tech is dedicated to making a college education accessible to all Hoosiers and providing training for good paying, in-demand jobs. This means we will continue to maintain affordable tuition and continue to offer credits that transfer to institutions around the state so that our students have the choice of entering the workforce or working on a bachelor’s degree,” said Ivy Tech Community College President Gerald Lamkin.

The increased revenue will go toward hiring additional full-time faculty, increased health insurance costs, improved information technology, implementing new academic programs, faculty and staff wage increases, utility costs, and costs associated with the opening of new facilities.

Ivy Tech Community College is the nation’s largest statewide community college system and the state’s second largest public post-secondary institution with over 105,000 students enrolled annually.  Ivy Tech has 23 campuses throughout Indiana.  It serves as the state's engine of workforce development, offering affordable degree programs and training that are aligned with the needs of its community along with courses and programs that transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana.  It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
