IVY TECH-SOUTH BEND OFFERING DECORATIVE ARTS CLASSES
 

SOUTH BEND, IND. (Jan. 25, 2007) – Ivy Tech Community College-South Bend, 220 Dean Johnson Blvd., is offering a series of five-week decorative arts classes this semester.  The instructor for the classes is Sheryl Kosovski, a faux finish artist, textile designer and muralist. 

The classes can be taken for academic credit for students pursuing a degree at Ivy Tech. Community members who are interested in taking the classes for personal enrichment may audit the classes (no credit or grade awarded) or enroll as a “courses only” student.

Italian Plasters, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00 – 9:40 p.m., Feb. 13 – March 15, 2007

This course introduces the traditional Venetian plaster finishes. The history of lime-based plasters, proper pigment selection, surface preparation and proper handling of materials will be discussed.  Students will learn how to replicate and incorporate the beautiful varied and elegant textures of the Old World into the modern setting.    

Basic Glazing Techniques, Saturdays, 8:30 a.m. – 2:40 p.m.Feb. 17 – March 17, 2007

This introductory course presents the basics in a variety of glazing techniques and wall finishes including traditional and sophisticated single and multi-colored wall glazing, luxurious metallic and iridescent finishes, additive and subtractive finishes and use of  both latex and oil mediums.  Techniques covered will include ragging, washes, sponging, strie’, linen, suede, leather, solvent release stippling, frottage, metal patinas, basic wood grain and basic stone and marbles

Painted Furniture and Accessories, Tuesdays and Thursdays, 7:00 – 9:40 p.m., March 27 – April 26, 2007

This course will cover the techniques of creating unique painted furniture and accessories.  Beginning with actual sample cabinet doors and drawer facings, students will learn how to create a variety of professional, Old World, transitional and contemporary finishes including multi-layered painted and wood-toned finishes that are suitable over raw wood, pre-existing finishes and painted base coats.  Distressing, antiquing, chipping, aged and artistic gilding and classic techniques such as floated marble and burl will be explored.  Room and surface preparation, the importance of clear coat for both barrier and finishing steps will also be covered.
