Ivy Tech is an open admission college; however, admission to the Surgical Technician program is a selective admission process. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to the program. Contact the Office of Student Affairs for pre-enrollment test dates and times.

Joint program with IU South Bend and Ivy Tech Michigan City. All general education courses can be taken at South Bend, Elkhart and Warsaw campuses. Surgical technology courses are taken at the Ivy Tech/Michigan City campus.

Program descriptionThe Surgical Technology Program prepares students to provide safe and efficient patient care in the operating room. Students participate in closely supervised clinical training in area hospitals. The program is offered in conjunction with IU South Bend and Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana’s Michigan City campus.PROGRAM OPTIONSThe program leads to the Associate of Applied Science Degree (AAS), granted by Ivy Tech Michigan City. All or many program credits transfer to four-year colleges or universities in Indiana and other states.

OCCUPATIONAL DUTIESThe surgical technologist actively participates in surgery by performing scrub and circulating duties such as:
• Passing instruments and supplies to surgical team members
• Preparing and positioning the patient
• Assisting the anesthesiologist
• Organizing operating equipment
• Keeping accurate recordsEMPLOYMENT OUTLOOKEmployment for surgical technologists is expected to grow much faster than average (over 35 percent) in Indiana and faster than average (21 to 35 percent) nationally through the year 2010.
