IVY TECH-WARSAW DEDICATES OAMTC
SOUTH BEND, IND. (August 27, 2009) – Ivy Tech Community College-Warsaw formally dedicated their Orthopedic and Advanced Manufacturing Training Center (OAMTC) yesterday.

The college opened a 5,600 sq. ft. OAMTC in October 2006 to support the existing and future training needs of the Warsaw/Kosciusko County orthopedic industry.  The training capacity was quickly met and in less than a year the college was discussing the need to expand the OAMTC.  Ground was broken for the expanded 20,000 sq. ft. OAMTC in the fall of 2008 – almost exactly two years after opening the first training center.

The OAMTC is a vital training site for advanced manufacturing professionals in the orthopedic industry. The training center has also proven to be a training outlet for many of the recently displaced recreational vehicle (RV) workers seeking retraining to make a career change in their future.

Equipment for both facilities was purchased with grants from the Department of Workforce Development.  The most recent grant was in the amount of $751,500.

According to Ivy Tech President Thomas Snyder, “The OAMTC is a template for training in the state.  We’re in the process of re-engineering Indiana one family at a time and the students here at the training center are proof of that.  They bring in the talent and initiative and we provide the tools for them to change their lives.”

Teresa Voors, Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development said, “The OAMTC fulfills what we all want in this state: more trained workers.  The partnership between the DWD, the governor’s office and Ivy Tech that made this day possible is an example of what can be accomplished as entities throughout the state continue to work together.”

Programs offered at the OAMTC include an associate of applied science in Manufacturing Technology and the Manufacturing Skills Training program through the Department of Workforce and Economic Development which leads to the new national Manufacturing Skills Standards Certification (MSSC).  Successful completion of this program leads to nine academic credits in the Manufacturing and Industrial Technology Program.  The college hopes to offer an AAS in Advanced Manufacturing within the next year
