Questions and Answers

I live in Kentucky do I get instate tuition rates?
Kentucky residents who live in Jefferson, Bullitt and Oldham Counties get reciprocity and therefore pay instate tuition.

Is there an application deadline?
Your admission file, which is composed of your completed application, your high school transcript or official GED, and your Compass test needs to be completed by the last preregistration day prior to the start of classes for the semester in which you want to enroll. The last preregistration day usually is one week prior to the start of classes each semester.

Do I have to take the Compass test?
All students are required to take the Compass test. However, you may waive part or all of it if:
1. You have earned an associate degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution.
2. Within the last 10 years you have earned a “C” or better in college level English or Intermediate Algebra, at a regionally accredited institution.
3. Within the last four years you took the SAT and earned 460 or higher in math and/or verbal.
4. Within the last four years you took the ACT and earned 19 or higher in English and/or math and/or reading.

If I think I can waive the Compass test, what should I do?
Complete an Compass waiver form and attach supporting documentation (i.e., your college transcript, SAT or ACT scores). Contact the Office of Admissions for a Compass Waiver Form.

How/when do I register for classes?
If we have your completed application, official high school transcript or official GED and Compass score, then your admission file is complete. If your Admission file is complete, you can register for classes during one of our four preregistration days.

I already took the Asset or Compass test, do I have to take it again?
If you took the Asset or Compass test more than two years ago at Ivy Tech, we recommend that you take the Compass test before you enroll in courses. If you took the Asset or Compass test within the last two years and would like to attempt to improve your score, then you should contact Jackie Baker, Assistant Director of Assessment at 812.246.3301, extension 4156 for retest dates and times.

I took the Compass test, but I’m not happy with my scores. Can I retake the Compass test?
Yes. You can retake the Compass test one time each semester. Contact Jackie Baker, Assistant Director of Assessment at 812.246.3301, extension 4156 for retest dates and times.

If I want to retake the Compass test, do I have to retake the whole test?

No. You can retest on as many sections as you want.

Can you help me find a major area of study?
