Guide for Ivy Tech Library Users
The library at IU East is the library for Ivy Tech, and you should always feel comfortable using us. Your tuition helps pay staff salaries, and you are entitled to benefit from the services you fund. The library is in Hayes Hall, the building dominated by the large, pointed window. You can enter on the first floor.

You can also access the Ivy Tech Community College Virtual Library at http://www.ivytech.edu/library/richmond or through Campus Connect..
How to get IU computer privileges
Anyone can log onto one of the eleven public access stations in the library research room by using the username “libguest” and no password, as directed on the screen. This will get access to IU East web pages, IUCat (the library’s catalog), and a handful of licensed databases. This will not give access to the general internet, and other computer features will be curtailed.
In order to get wider ranging computer access, a patron needs an IU East library card. All Ivy Tech students are entitled to one of these cards. Simply present an Ivy Tech ID card to the Circulation Staff, and they will make a library card for you.
Computer passwords are changed daily, and can be checked out at the circulation desk like a book. These have the username ‘lib254’ and an eight-character password. When you check one out, it is due at closing time that day. With it, a patron has unrestricted internet access, as well as access to all IU East licensed databases. There is some overlap between IU East and Ivy Tech online resources, but there is also much more that you may find useful in preparing your research and classwork.
Unfortunately, IU East resources will not be available to Ivy Tech students outside the library. If you need access to computer databases from home, you can use your Ivy Tech Campus Connect from: http://www.ivytech.edu/library/richmond/
Alternately, you can use a resource like http://www.inspire.net to get material from a few databases that the state of Indiana subscribes to.
Printing in the Library
When you want to print a document, you will need to direct it to the printer EA-HY-PRSPUB. This should be the default printer. The computer will prompt you for a release code. This can be anything, from ‘1234’ to your first name. Go to the Print Release Station (this is the only computer monitor that is not a flat panel) and type this code in where it prompts you (you do not need to fill in the ‘username’ and ‘password’ blanks; those are for IU East students) and a list of documents you sent to the printer will appear. Put a check next to each item you would like and click the ‘Print’ button. You will be prompted to insert a print debit card into the reader (these can be purchased in room 115 – feel free to ask the circulation staff for help if you need it). It will deduct the cost from the card’s balance, eject it, and print your documents. Click ‘End Session’ to log off.
Borrowing Privileges
You can check out any number of items at once. Most books will check out to you for four weeks, and videos for one week. You can renew an item by phone (765/973-8311) up to two times. Most periodicals are now shelved with the rest of the books, and can be checked out as well.
Interlibrary Loan
If you need an item held by another library, you can request it through Interlibrary Loan (the ILL service we use is called ILLiad). On the library’s homepage, http://www.iue.edu/library/ the second link under the picture is ‘Online Interlibrary Loan’. Click this, then log in (or create an account with ‘First Time Users’ if this is your first time). Choose what type of item you would like to request (photocopy and book will probably be the most common), enter the relevant information, then click ‘Submit Request’.
Reference Services
If you need any assistance, either in your research efforts or for topics of interest to you, there is always a reference-trained staff member on duty to answer your questions. If you cannot get to the library, feel free to call us at 765/973-8311.
Library Events
Periodically, the library offers some program or event. In the past, we’ve had readings of children’s books, Halloween stories, and other things, as well as presentations of faculty research and group events. Library readings also offer seasonal refreshments, and we try to have them once a month. If you’d like to attend, we’d love to have you; and if you’ve got an idea for a theme, we’d like to hear that too.
Family Friendly
The library has a large collection of children’s books on the second floor. While this collection is principally to support the education department, we want children to benefit from it as well, and have furnished the area with toys, puzzles, and other items to make it appealing. If you need a place to study where you can still keep an eye on your kids, we might be the place for you. The computer passwords that you can check out also work on the computers in room 254, which is adjacent to the children’s section.
