The quality of student performance or competency level, as determined by the instructor at the completion of a course is indicated by a letter grade of A, B, C, D or F. Ivy Tech does not use pluses and minuses as a part of its grading system.
Each designation has a numerical value per credit hour, referred to as "quality points." This meaning and quality point value per credit hour of each letter grade are shown in the table below:

Status Code
Status Codes describe the state or condition of a course on the student's record for which a grade has not been awarded. Status code indications carry no quality points. Status codes and the symbols used to indicate them are:
| I | = | Incomplete | V | = | Verified Competency |
| AU | = | Audit | NW | = | No-Show Withdrawal |
| S | = | Satisfactory | W | = | Withdrawal |
| U | = | Unsatisfactory |
Incomplete - "I" designations may be issued, at the instructor's discretion, to students who have actively pursued a course and are doing passing work at the end of the course but who have not complete the final examination and/or other specific course assignments. To remove an "I" designation, a student must meet with the instructor and make arrangements to complete course requirements in a specified period. Incomplete grades that have no reported final grade are converted to “F” status thirty (30) days after the start of the next term.
Improving a Grade
Students, with the approval of faculty advisors, may attempt to improve D or F grades by repeating courses (allowable once in most programs). The lower grade will continue to be reflected on the official transcript; however the student's grade point average will reflect the highest grade earned.
