Accounting Program Information

Every company, large or small, must keep financial information. This information is used to make the daily decisions required in our fast-paced, competitive business environment. The Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana Accounting program helps you develop a diverse array of technological skills and aptitudes needed by today’s employees. You’ll also develop problem-solving abilities, along with analytical and interpersonal skills. Of course, Ivy Tech’s Accounting program also provides you with the practical skills needed by today’s employers. A strong background in accounting can lead to entry-level positions in accounts payable, accounts receivable, inventory control, payroll, fixed assets and general ledger accounting, or to related careers in management, banking or finance. Completion of the Associate of Applied Science degree requires 60 credits. Students may earn a Technical Certificate by completing the 30-credit program.

The Accounting program develops an understanding of accounting principles, business law, communications, business equipment and related areas of study in the field. Instruction is offered in computerized accounting systems. Technical skills in financial accounting, cost accounting and tax preparation are emphasized. Accounting duties typically include maintaining journals and ledgers, processing banking transactions, billing, preparing payroll, maintaining inventory records, purchasing, processing expense reports, preparing financial statements and analyzing managerial reports. Position titles may include junior or staff accountant, junior auditor, cost accounting clerk, bookkeeper, payroll clerk, inventory clerk, receivable clerk and financial management trainee.
