Blackboard is Ivy Tech's online course management system that can be used by both distance and on-campus students. Blackboard can be accessed several places, including the Campus Connect login page and Campus Connect Quick Links. |
How do I start an online course?
|
To get started successfully in an online course, you need to do three things at least one week before your class begins:
Remember that online classes follow a schedule just like a face-to-face class, so you will have assignments due on specific dates. Even if you do not have a required book or piece of material on the first day of class, it's important to log in and get started during the first day or two of the course. Many instructors post assignments that don't require a textbook during the first week so you can get started without having to wait, especially if there is some delay with your textbook. |
Why can't I access Blackboard?
|
There may be multiple reasons why you cannot access Blackboard (note: Blackboard is unavailable from 3:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m. every Friday due to scheduled maintenance). Here are some reasons why you may not be able to access Blackboard:
If you have tried the above and still cannot access Blackboard, contact the Help Desk. |
I am registered for a class, but it does not appear in Blackboard. What do I do?
| Classes do not appear in your Blackboard account until the official start date of that course. To view the official start date for your class, please log in to Campus Connect and view your student schedule. You will see the start and end dates on your schedule. If the start date has already passed and the course is not listed in Blackboard, please contact the helpdesk. |
I have old classes that appear in Blackboard. Can I remove those?
| Yes. On the My Institution tab in Blackboard, click the pencil icon at the top of the My Courses box. Uncheck the display box next to any courses you do not wish to see anymore. |
I logged into my class and there is no information. What should I do?
| Please contact your instructor to find out when information will be posted. Ivy Tech faculty are asked to respond to email questions within 48 hours, so please allow time for the faculty member to respond. You may also contact distance education staff on your campus or the helpdesk for assistance in resolving these types of issues. |
How do I purchase my books for my online class?
|
Books for all online classes can be purchased at the Follett online bookstore. |
Can I purchase books online for my traditional classes? If yes, how?
|
Books for traditional classes can be purchased at the Follett online bookstore. |
I ordered my textbook, but it hasn't arrived yet. What should I do?
| Log in to your class the first week of the course and review the syllabus and calendar, read announcements, and follow instructions posted there. Most faculty members teaching an online class provide activities that you can do even if your textbooks have not arrived yet. |
My class is not showing up in Blackboard.
| In most cases, this is because the class has not started yet. Some 4, 8, 10, and 12-week courses do not begin until after the semester starts. You will not be able to see these courses in Blackboard until the first day of class. This is the same for 16-week courses. You will not be able to view them in Blackboard until the first day of the semester. |
My class was there before, but now it's gone.
| This can be caused by a payment issue or the class closing because of low enrollment. You will need to contact your regional registrar. |
|
Login to Blackboard, then click on the Community tab. You should then see a download link for Pronto. Click on the link, select your operating system, then download. For assistance using Pronto, check out this user's guide. |
Why do I get "invalid file error" when I try to upload my assignment?
| Be sure the file type you are trying to upload is an MS Office file (ie. doc, ppt, pps, xls) or rich text format (rtf). If this is the case, and you are using Internet Explorer, try using Firefox instead to access Blackboard and upload your assignment. To download Firefox, click here. |
Is there a Blackboard student guide I can download?
| Yes. Blackboard 8 or Blackboard 9 |

I'm not sure online learning is right for me. Can you help me decide?
|
Ivy Tech offers five different types of distance learning courses. These course types give students a number of choices in how they take a distance learning class. When you search for classes in the course schedule, you will see one of five codes if the course is a distance learning course. A few guidelines as to whether or not each course is the right fit for you are provided below:
I - Online Only An Online Only course (often just referred to as an Internet course) is a course taken online. The only time a student may need to go to a campus or testing center is to take a proctored exam. This normally occurs two to four times per semester and will be explained in detail by the instructor in courses where it is required. If you use the following phrases to describe yourself, then an online class may be an excellent choice for you:
V - Videoconferencing Courses A videoconferencing course is offered in one of two formats - IP Video or Video Streaming. If your course is an IP Video Course, you will need to travel to an Ivy Tech campus or designated learning center which has IP Video equipment to take your course. The class will meet at a specific day and time each week and you will be able to ask questions of the instructor using a live video and audio feed. You will also hear and see the lecture live. This is very much like a regular course except that you may not be in the same room or even the same city as the instructor. If your course uses video streaming, you will be able to view the course content from any location with a high-speed (Cable Modem, DSL, or higher) Internet connection. You will need to have your own web cam and microphone that connect to your computer, so you can talk to your instructor and the other students in the class. These classes still meet at a set day and time each week, but give you the added convenience of being able to participate in the class from any location where you have high speed access to the Internet, a web cam, and microphone. C - Video and Online A course that is coded with a C mixes video and online learning so students will need to feel comfortable using both methods of learning. H - Hybrid A hybrid course mixes traditional classroom instruction with online learning. Students in a hybrid class will go to campus for a part of the class and participate in classroom and/or laboratory activities. They will also be responsible for reviewing content on the web, completing assignments and submitting them online, and participating in online discussions and other online learning activities. If you are interested in trying an online class but are not familiar with how they work, taking a hybrid course first is a good way to get a feel it. |
