Ivy Tech to launch new Electrical Engineering Technology degree program
INDIANAPOLIS – Final approval was granted this week by the state Commission for Higher Education (CHE) for Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana to offer an Associate of Science degree program in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET).
The program will be launched this year at the college’s Indianapolis and South Bend campuses, and will provide graduates with a solid foundation in concepts and applications used in the field of electronics and computing. It will prepare graduates to enter the growing electronics and computing field and equip them to respond to future advances and changes in their profession.
Earning the A.S. degree in Electrical Engineering Technology will require 65 to 67 credit hours within a program curriculum that is consistent with Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology and Technology Accreditation Commission standards.
Also, Ivy Tech EET students will be able to transfer a total of 61 semester credit hours to IUPUI’s Electrical Engineering Technology program toward a Bachelor of Science degree, or a total of 67 semester credit hours to Purdue North Central’s Engineering Technology program toward a Bachelor of Science degree.
“This is yet another significant step forward in our commitment to addressing the need of Indiana business and industry for highly trained electrical engineering technicians, as well as opening the doors to greater career opportunities for our fellow citizens,” Ivy Tech President Tom Snyder commented regarding the CHE’s decision to authorize the new degree program.
He said the EET curriculum “addresses the need for skilled electrical engineering technicians who can work with engineers and other staff, implementing and supporting their operations -- and just as importantly, it creates a bridge for the student to move from a two-year to four-year degree in engineering technology.”
In addition to intensive technical, math and science courses, the program incorporates human relations and communications training, problem-solving and analysis and critical thinking skills. No prerequisite coursework or degrees are required for admission; students may enter the program after meeting standard admission requirements for Ivy Tech Community College. Eligible students may also apply financial aid to program costs.
Additionally, the Indiana Commission for Higher Education granted approval for Ivy Tech’s facility in Warsaw to offer Associate of Applied Science and Associate of Science degrees in Business Administration and Ivy Tech’s Muncie and Richmond campuses to offer students the College’s Associate of Science in Respiratory Care.
Ivy Tech Community College is the state’s second largest public post-secondary institution with over 110,000 students enrolled annually. Ivy Tech has 23 campuses throughout Indiana. It serves as the state's engine of workforce development, offering affordable degree programs and training that are aligned with the needs of its community along with courses and programs that transfer to other colleges and universities in Indiana. It is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools.
