How to submit an interlibrary loan request (pdf)
Interlibrary Loan Service:
- is available to current Ivy Tech Community College faculty, students and staff.
- Users must have an Ivy Tech student ID or employee nametag before their ILL requests will be processed.
- The Interlibrary Loan Service allows patrons to request materials and books needed for their research, that are not owned by their local Ivy Tech campus library.
- Although Interlibrary Loan gives you access to many more resources, it may take longer than other means of access.
The average delivery time is 5-10 business days. Always start your research early for the best results. You may want to contact the Reference Desk for assistance in locating other in-house or online materials.
Community (non-Ivy Tech) patrons should contact their local public library,
workplace library, or other appropriate institution for interlibrary loan service.
Items Available/Not Available Through ILL
Conditions for interlibrary lending are set by the National Interlibrary Loan Code of the American Library Association and by individual libraries. Some libraries will not lend certain types of materials, making them difficult to obtain on loan.
Patrons may request:
- books
- articles
- videos
- DVDs
- CD-ROMs
- cassettes
- and many other types of materials
The following items are rarely available through ILL:
- entire issues of journals, magazines, and newspapers
- reference
materials
- old (published prior to 1900) or rare books
- record albums
- software
- popular commercial films or music
- textbooks
- genealogy materials
- music scores
- corporate technical reports and other in-house reports
- some high-demand and/or recent publications
- theses & dissertations: a few universities do not loan them or restrict their use when they do
Submitting ILL Requests
Requests should be submitted through WorldCat, the steps are as follows:
- Search WorldCat to find the item that you would like to borrow
- Click the ILL button
that appears above the record
- Complete and submit the form that appears (items with an asterisk are required)
Note: For article requests, enter the detailed article information in the Comments box at the bottom of the request form.
Notification
- Users will be notified by phone or email when an item is ready for pick-up, or if there are any problems with fulfilling a request.
- Books and other items must be picked up at the Circulation Desk in the Carter Library.
- Articles are sometimes made available to patrons electronically. Patrons are notified via email when those articles are available.
Cost
There is no charge to current Ivy Tech faculty, staff and students to submit requests. In most cases, we can obtain interlibrary loans at no cost, but if there will be charges involved, we will contact the borrower to see if they are willing to pay.
Overdue or lost materials, however, are subject to fines and other fees charged
by the lending institution which will be the responsibility of the patron. If interlibrary loan materials are damaged, or are not returned, an administrative hold may be put on your records, until the materials are returned or paid for.
Loan Period
- Loan periods and restrictions are determined by the lending library.
- The due date appears on the sleeve that is attached to the borrowed material.
- Some materials may be designated "Library Use Only" by the lending institution, and will not be able to be removed from the library.
- ILL materials may not be placed on reserve, due to copyright restrictions.
- Renewals may be requested, unless the lender has specifically indicated no renewals.
- Requests for renewal should be made at least two days in advance of the item's due date.
- Libraries that loan materials reserve the right to recall items at any time for their users. These materials have been lent to us by other institutions, and the needs of their students take priority.
Returning Borrowed Material
All items borrowed through ILL
must be returned to the Circulation Desk by the due date.
Patrons' ILL borrowing privileges may be limited or cancelled if due dates are ignored.
If interlibrary loan materials are damaged, or are not returned, an administrative hold may be put on your records, until the materials are paid for.
Copyright Restrictions
The copyright law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other
reproductions of copyrighted material. Under certain conditions specified in the law, libraries and archives are authorized to
furnish a photocopy or other reproduction. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be
"used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a
photocopy or reproduction in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement. This institution reserves\
the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of the order would involve violation of copyright law.
For comprehensive information, see the Copyright & Fair Use site maintained by Stanford University Libraries.
