Instructions: The following exercises ask you to find information on the Web using a variety of different search tools, using subject directories and keyword searches. Use a multiple search engine such as Dogpile, to locate the answers to the even numbered questions below. Use another search tool--either a directory search tool like Yahoo! or a single search engine such as Google--for the odd numbered questions below. If you are unsuccessful with one type of search tool, then try another. For each question you will need to:
  1. Write down which search engine(s) you used
  2. For each search, write down the URL (web address) of the answer page(s) (It often begins with "http:// ..." )
  3. Write down what you used as keywords (specific search terms and symbols in order they were typed), and/or write down which subject categories you used (if you used a directory like Yahoo!).
Search Engine Exercises:
  1. Pick 2 search engines and identify 4 different advanced search features each can perform (beyond simple word and phrase searching). Write down names of the search engines and these features:






  2. Using Google, find the Web sites for at least 2 different national telephone directories (online directories that have addresses and phone numbers for most everyone in the country). Name the 2 directories and give their URLs below. See if your own phone number is available on these directories and indicate either "yes" or "no" next to the directory's URL.





  3. Find official government information related to federal income taxes which talks about either the Child Tax Credit or the Child and Dependent Care Credit for the 2003 tax year. Write the URL and the name of the website providing this information below.





  4. Find the website for the South Bend Tribune or your hometown newspaper's web site. Write down the URL, the date of the online issue you found, and the title of the cover story for the issue.





  5. Locate a public library home page in either the town you were born in, the town you grew up in, or find the webpage for Allen County Public Library (Ft. Wayne). Write down the URL of the library you chose, and find the name of the library's director.






  6. Find a page that provides a table of contents for a recent issue of a peer-reviewed scholarly online journal in either nursing, psychology, sociology, economics, biology, or history. Write the name of the journal, the URL of the website, and the title of one of the articles.






  7. Find the fulltext of one of Shakespeare’s plays (Such as Hamlet or Othello). Write down the URL for this website.






  8. Find out the size and weight of NASA's Cassini satellite used on a mission to Saturn. Write down this information and the URL of the webpage providing this information.





  9. Using Google, find the official home page of Representative Chris Chocola (U.S. Congressman, Representative for Indiana, Democrat, 3rd District). Write down the URL of this site. For what Indiana company did Chocola serve as CEO?






  10. Using Dogpile, find a site that lists the ISBN (International Standard Book Number) for a recent edition of "A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Chicago Guides to Writing, Editing, and Publishing)" by Kate L. Turabian. Write down the URL for this website and the ISBN number for this book. Hint: You might end up at one of the online bookstores.
Extra Credit:
  1. Find any page that gives information on the Top Search Terms used by Search Engines. Write down the URL of the website and the first term listed.
