Distinguished Alumnus Award
"Greg is a strong, quiet, leader. He gives unselfishly of his time and his talents to help others. He also is a great example of the best of Ivy Tech graduates."
--Alayne Cook, director of student life and development
Greg Butts likes building things. That interest, coupled with his outstanding commitment to the college and his community, has earned him the honor of being named the 2009 Ivy Tech Kokomo Region Distinguished Alumnus.
The former United States Army Specialist earned his Associate of Applied Science Degree in Construction Technology from Ivy Tech in 2005. He has continued his studies at Ivy Tech taking classes in Manufacturing and Industrial Technology. While continuing his education, he has become a student leader in civic engagement.
In 2006, Greg signed on to volunteer with Ivy Tech's now annual alternative spring break trip to the Gulf Coast. Participants on the trip spend their week-long break repairing homes damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Greg was not only a leader of that original group in 2006, but he has been a major contributor to each of the three groups since.
Inspired by their work in the South after the second trip, Greg and two other students proposed the addition of a student group on campus. The group's mission? To help our surrounding communities in a similar way that they had helped families in the deep South. In 2007, the Community Constructors student organization was established. Since then, the group has helped organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Coordinated Assisted Ministries (CAM), the Mental Health Association, Carver Community Center and the United Way, just to name a few. Greg has served as president of the group since its founding. For his dedication and work in the community, Greg was nominated for the Student Community Commitment Award in 2008.
Greg possesses many qualities that have made him the leader he has become. Peers say he is compassionate, flexible, caring and patient and that he exhibits the highest integrity in everything he does. He also has impressed the college's administration.
According to Alayne Cook, the director of student life and development, "Greg is a strong, quiet, leader. He gives unselfishly of his time and his talents to help others. He also is a great example of the best of Ivy Tech graduates."
It is this commitment that has earned Greg the 2009 Ivy Tech Kokomo Region Distinguished Alumnus Award.
