Ivy Tech Community College News Release
LOGANSPORT, Ind.—Ivy Tech community College Logansport students Angela Southerton and Rachael Drye have been selected as this year’s recipients of the Reed Family Scholarship. Each student will receive $1,000 to assist with tuition for the current academic year.
Joe and Barbara Reed, the donors and founders of the scholarship, felt both students were worthy recipients. “Their stories were ones in which we felt they would be able to use the help,” explained Barbara, “and they have both worked hard and have set goals for themselves.”
Southerton, who is working toward completing her associate degree in criminal justice, said she is fascinated by law and its origins. She adds, “I also would like to ensure that justice is served in a prudent manner.” While at Ivy Tech, Angela has been active in a number of student activities. She has participated in the Ivy Tech Student Leadership Academy and has served as officer in both the Student Government Association and Phi Theta Kappa. As vice-president of Phi Theta Kappa, she attended the Phi Theta Kappa convention in Tennessee. While consistently making the dean’s list each semester, Angela has participated in the work study program. Angela plans to attend Indiana State University upon graduation, obtain her bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, and attend law school. “Ivy Tech has given me so much that it is only natural for me to want to give back to the community and society in which I live.”
Drye, a student in Ivy Tech’s nursing program, always knew that working with children would be an integral part of her life and career. After beginning her studies at Ivy Tech, she now envisions herself working in a long-term care facility for children with special needs. It is obvious that the Drye family values education as her husband is also going back to school. “With both my husband and I being in school full time and having two young children under age three, finances are tight. Receiving this scholarship greatly helps me attain my goal of graduating from Ivy Tech with a nursing degree and enables me to serve the community of special needs children in this area and beyond.”
Joe and Barbara Reed are longtime supporters of the college. Through their foresight and contributions, they established the Reed Family Scholarship in 2003 that is awarded annually to two deserving Ivy Tech Logansport students. As a result, 12 students have received $1,000 for help with their tuition. “We established the scholarship because we believe in education,” said Joe. “We believe that it is a sound investment in the future.”
