Ivy Tech’s Workforce and Economic Development to offer CNC certification course

KOKOMO, Ind.—Ivy Tech Community College’s Department of Workforce and Economic Development will be offering two National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) certification courses for Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Operators this summer and fall.

CNC machine operator skills are required for over 500,000 manufacturing jobs. A CNC machine operator is required to have expertise in running CNC machines, but CNC operators are not machinists. The NIMS CNC certification preparation course will cover the following key skill areas: CNC mill, lathe and grinder set-up and operation; tool identification, set-up, use, and maintenance; grinder set-up and operation; fixture, set-up and operation; CNC troubleshooting and maintenance for operators; precision measurement and gauging; print reading; geometric dimensioning and tolerancing; machining processes and statistical process control; quality and cycle time optimization; and CNC program operation.

The cost of the course is $2,975, which includes all instructional materials and one certification exam. The class will be offered twice this summer and fall. The first offering will be held from 6 to 10 p.m. and will begin Monday, July 6, and run through Friday, Aug. 21. The second offering will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. and will begin Monday, Sept. 14, and run through Friday, Oct. 30. Both courses will meet Monday through Friday in Kokomo.
