Disability ServicesIt is your responsibility to identify yourself to the Office of Disability Services and to provide professional documentation of the disability in order to qualify for academic accommodations. Accommodationscan be provided only after these conditions are met. It is also your responsibility to contact your instructors each semester to present the Accommodations Notification Form, which identifies the necessary accommodations for your classes. Prior to each semester, contact disability services to authorizethis form. Students with disabilities must take the same responsibility for their education as non-disabled students. This includes maintaining the same academic levels and meeting comparable standards of appropriate behavior.
The process. The laws that apply to kindergarten through 12th grade are different from those applicable to postsecondary institutions. While primary and secondary schools are required to identify students with disabilities, students at the college level must take the responsibility to contact disability services
to make their needs known. Accommodations recommended by the college may differ from those provided in high school.
When to take the placement test. Although students with disabilities will not be asked to identify themselves prior to admission, those students needing accommodations for the placement test
must verify their needs with the offices of Admissions and Disability Services prior to testing. Services will not be denied to students with obvious physical disabilities or to those with outdated documentation while current documentation is actively being sought.
Retesting. If you neglected to notify disabilities services about your disability when you took the assessment, you may retest, but you must first supply the proper documentation of your disability
to qualify for testing accommodations.
Eligibility for accommodations. Accommodations for assessment testing are determined on a case-by-case basis. Some students may need to listen to the assessment because of visual impairment while others may need extended time because of slow processing speed. Some students with disabilities will not need testing accommodations. Disability services must determine the accommodations based on documented individual needs. Services are available at no charge to students; however, some accommodations and services do require funding. Your are encouraged to apply to Vocational Rehabilitation Services for possible support services.
