Information Technology Support

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY SUPPORT

The Information Technology Support program provides students with knowledge and skills needed to deploy, troubleshoot, and support stand-alone and networked computing systems and technology. Courses are designed to provide both technical and soft skills needed to work with colleagues and customers. The program is designed to prepare students for a professional career in the computer technology field. Students will learn problem solving techniques for solutions to practical computer related issues; skills in computing technology support similar to that in a helpdesk environment; the soft skills needed to interact with and support a diversity of customers; the ability to diagnose problems and walk customers through resolving these issues; skills in helping customers with computer related issues; and to supporting/repairing computer equipment and training others in using computing technology.

Certificates:

IT Help Desk (22 credit hours = 2 semesters)

Leads to certifications in the Information Technology Support field including CompTIA: A+ and Network +; Microsoft Certified Professional: Configuring Windows; and Microsoft Technology Associate: Database Fundamentals and Windows Server Administration Fundamentals.  Completion of the IT Help Desk Certificate leads to employment, and/or completing an associate degree.

Short-term certificates are sequences of technical and professional courses that are industry focused and designed for workforce preparation. They provide access to targeted, short-term training in a discipline, and completers may sit for specific certification exams. Courses in certificate programs also apply toward technical certificates and associate degree programs in the subject area.

The Technical Certificate in Information Technology Support can be earned on the way to acquiring the Associate of Applied Science degree. Many available jobs require advanced education beyond the high school diploma. Technical Certificate programs provide education in conceptual and technical skills for specific occupations. The program content is designed to develop competency in the comprehension of general and technical skills. Certificate programs require mastery of basic reading, writing, mathematical and quantitative skills.

Associate of Applied Science (60 credit hours = 4 semesters)

The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Information Technology Support will give you the knowledge and skills for career entry or advancement in a current job. Associate of Applied Science degree programs are two-year programs that prepare students for careers, career changes and career advancement. Students who need to take longer to complete the degree because of job or family obligations can take the program over a longer period of time. AAS programs may also prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions. These programs offer education in recognized technical areas and specialties with emphasis on analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The program content, which is approximately 30% general education and 70% professional/technical, provides depth and breadth in conceptual and professional/technical skills. The general education courses equip students with the problem solving, communications, scientific and mathematical skills to compete successfully in the job market. Professional/technical courses equip students with the skills to obtain employment and to advance in the workforce.

Cyber Technology certificate program

Ivy Tech-Northeast offers a certificate in Cyber Technology due to an awarded grant by the U.S. Department of Labor’s Employment and Training Administration as part of the National STEM Consortium. Courses for the program begin in January 2013. Interested individuals can train for a new career in as little as one year and work toward industry certifications in Cisco CCNA and CompTIA Network+, A+ and Security+. Recipients of the certificate would qualify for jobs in cyber customer service and technical support, which may require a background check at hiring organizations.

Students will learn to succeed on the job with:

  • Hands-on, skills-based projects
  • Consistent, convenient, compressed schedule
  • Flexible “hybrid delivery” via classroom and online instruction
  • Foundation skills to help students succeed in technical courses
  • Critical thinking and problem solving based on real-life situations
  • Business skills in communication, resume writing and interview techniques

This U.S. Department of Labor grant targets workers who have lost their job due to the adverse effects of foreign trade, and other unemployed and underemployed workers. Veterans receive priority of service. Programs are eligible for financial aid: Trade Adjustment Assistance, Workforce Investment Act, Pell Grants.
