Transfer Advising

Begin Now
Clarify your academic and career goals as early as possible as you begin classes at Ivy Tech Community College-Central Indiana. The basis for successful transfer is establishing a clear goal and then planning the academic pathway that will lead you toward it. You may get assistance in this process through the Career Services Office (317-921-4881), or by meeting with your academic advisor or department chairperson.

Do Your Research
Get to know the four-year colleges/universities you would like to attend by exploring their Web sites, examining catalogs, attending information sessions offered by the Transfer Center or contacting them directly through their admissions office or an advisor for the department you are interested in.

In your research look for and keep a record of deadlines for applications, placement tests, interviews, scholarships. Also note the admissions requirements for each college, such as GPA, letters of reference, etc. Make sure you understand the difference between being accepted into the institution and into a specific program.

Also, find out any differences in transferring an Ivy Tech associate's degree versus transferring a number of courses before completing the Ivy Tech degree.

Check the Transfer Agreement
Verify the main points and conditions of Ivy Tech's transfer agreement with the college/university you are interested in by visiting the Transfer Center or visiting the Transfer Canter Web site.

Getting to Know Your Ivy Tech Advisor
Communicate with your advisor or program chair early in your college career, letting him/her know of your plans for transfer. Continue regular communication each semester as you prepare to register for classes, reviewing your transfer plans and selecting classes that fit your plan.

Know What and When to Send
You must send your accurate, completed application by the deadline date. Also, file a formal request in the Ivy Tech Registrar's office for an official transcript to be sent to the receiving institution. The receiving institution may also require a special form for transfer of credit.

Protect your Financial Aid
If you are receiving any form of financial aid, see an Ivy Tech financial aid representative to learn what steps you must take in order to maintain your financial aid at the receiving institution.
