Ivy Tech Community Collge is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges. The Radiologic Technology program is accredited by the Joint Review Committee of Education for Radiologic Technology. The mission of our program is to provide graduates with cognitive, psychomotor, and affective behaviors through educational opportunities in Radiologic Technology, therefore providing Indianapolis and the surrounding areas with competent individuals to function within a healthcare environment.

The Radiology faculty will advise you when needed. You must make an appointment. Program chairs and faculty members will not do registrations on a walk-in basis.

Radiology is truly an exciting field that is in great demand for qualified people. We want to help you with your goals to become a part of a healthcare team. Please carefully read the information supplied in this packet. It contains important information concerning the Radiologic Technology Program.

You are eligible to apply to the program when you have completed or are in the last semester of completing the eight pre-requisite classes. All classes must be completed by the fall semester that you are applying. November 15 is the application deadline and you must submit a portfolio with the following information:

  • Notice of Intent. (See form in this packet)
  • Two professional letters of recommendation. (See form in this packet)
  • Essay on why Radiologic Technology is a good field for you.
  • Transcript from Ivy Tech or any other college documenting all pre-requisites and grades

If you are planning to apply to the Radiologic Technology Program, please read this information carefully.

The Radiologic Technology Program has a limited enrollment based on clinical site availability. Application and/or completion of prerequisite courses does not guarantee admission into the program.

Student must have everything completed and submitted by November 15

  1. Complete all prerequisite courses or be in the process of completing them during semester of application with a GPA of 2.5 or higher to be considered for admission.
  2. Write and submit with portfolio to the program chair a 500- to 700-word report based on why the Radiologic Technology career is good for you.
  3. Student must be 18 before starting the clinical portion of the program.
  4. Any accepted student must also meet requirements by the state licensing agency. The student will be notified of these upon acceptance to the program.
  5. Acceptance into the program will be conditional until a completed physical form has been returned to the program. Students will be given more information upon acceptance into the program.

Registration with someone else could delay admission to the program.

Below is a suggested sequence for taking prerequisite courses.

Physical Requirements for Clinical
Physical Requirements - The student technologist must be capable of meeting the physical demands of the job, which are in the job descriptions of many employers. The physical requirements are listed below:
Physical Demand Characteristics of Work:
Lifts 100 to 150lbs. frequently
Walks and/or stands most of the day. Bends and stoops frequently
Pulls/pushes equipment/carts etc., on a regular basis.
20/100 vision, correctable 20/30 in one eye or 20/100 vision correctable to 20/40 in both eyes.
Normal hearing, or corrected hearing within normal ranges.

Motor Function:
1. The student must be able to stand unassisted for long periods of time.
2. The student must be able to lift patients on and off the radiographic table independently 80% of the time as well as in and out of hospital beds, stretchers, and wheelchairs.
3. The student must be able to lift and handle radiographic accessories and equipment.
4. The student must be able to manipulate stationary and mobile radiographic equipment.
5. The student must be able to assist personnel and patients in emergency situations.

Visual Observation:
1. Students must be able to observe and evaluate reasonably, patient's condition using signs and symptoms.
2. Students must be able to interpret instrument control panels, technique charts, and other materials for appropriate operation of equipment and patient care.
3. Students must be able to view radiographs and interpret quality factors and identify anatomy.

Hearing Ability:
1. The student must have normal hearing or have hearing corrected
to within normal range when facing patients or with back turned toward patient.

Tactile:
1. Feel vibrations (e.g., palpate pulses)
2. Detect temperature (e.g., skin solutions)
3. Feel differences in surface characteristics (e.g., skin turgor, rashes)
4. Hear in situation when not able to see lips (i.e, when masks are worn)
5. Hear auditory alarms (i.e. monitors, fire alarms)

Communication Skills:
1. The student must be able to transfer information by verbal and non-verbal means to personnel and patients.
2. The student must be able to receive and interpret communication from personnel and patients and be aware of appropriate confidentiality.

Behavioral and Social Skills:
1. The student's behavioral and social skills must be acceptable within the college and clinical locations.

Students interested in the Radiologic Technology program must apply by November 15. There are eight prerequisite classes that must be completed before you can start the radiology program. November 15 is the application deadline and the student must have a portfolio on file with the Radiologic Technology program office on or before the deadline.

Portfolio:
• Notice of Intent. See www.ivytech.edu/indianapolis to secure a notice of intent form
• Ivy Tech transcripts and other colleges and universities attended with prerequisite classes
• Two professional letters of recommendation. The letters should be from qualified professionals with their credentials on official letterhead.The letter should include a date and authentic signature. The professional should state how they know the candidate and any special qualities or characteristics.
• A 500-700 word paper explaining why they think this is a good field for them to go into. The paper should be typed in APA format with 1 1/2” line spacing. The paper will be judged on content, originality, grammar, spelling, neatness, and the ability to follow directions.

Only those applicants with complete files will be considered for program selection. It is possible that a personal interview will be conducted with program faculty. The personal interview is a privilege offered to the applicant by the committee. Not all applicants will be interviewed. Students are admitted into the Radiologic Technology program based upon the following criteria:
• Completed notice of intent
• Prerequisite college GPA
• Personal interview
• A 500 to 700-word paper
• Letters of professional recommendation
• All college transcripts including Ivy Tech for prerequisite classes

Portfolios are not returned. Please attend an information session for the most current information before submitting your portfolio for consideration. Information sessions are held each semester in room 315 of the Fairbanks Building at the Lawrence campus. Criminal Checks and Drug Testing
It is possible that during your course of study, you will be required by a clinical internship or externship site to submit to drug screening or criminal history check. While the College does not require drug screening or criminal history checks of its Health Sciences Division students (unless required by law to do so), the College cannot control or influence the requirements placed on students by independent clinical sites. Consequently, your ability to successfully complete your program of study may be affected by your ability to pass a drug screening test or criminal history check. In the event that you are required to submit to one or to both, you will have to bear the cost of the test/check.


Guidelines for Writing Your Essay

Write a 500-700 word paper addressing your thoughts about why you think this is a good career for you to go into.

Your report should be typed and in APA format. You should include a title page and your name on the report. Your report will be evaluated to include, but not limited to, the following criteria: originality, content, grammar, spelling, and neatness.

Portfolios need to be in the Program office by November 15 or they will not be accepted.

Letters of Recommendation- Radiologic Technology

Students requesting admission into the Radiologic Technology Program should arrange for two letters of recommendation to be prepared. These letters should be included as part of your portfolio which is due no later than November 15. The letters should be from qualified professionals with their credentials on official letterhead. The letters should include a date adn authentic signature. The professional should state how they know the candidate and any special qualities or characteristics.
