Certified Nursing Assistants work under the direction of licensed nurses, usually in nursing homes and home health agencies. Their duties include providing basic care. Nursing assistants observe the patients physical, emotional and mental status and report and changes to the nursing staff. Nursing assistants that are employed in extended care facilities are often the principal caregivers.

They often have more contact with residents than other members of the staff. Since some residents may occupy an extended care facility for months or years, nurse assistants often develop ongoing relationships with the residents and respond to them in a positive and caring manner. Qualified Medication Aid (Q.M.A.) The Qualified Medication Aide course trains Certified Nursing Assistants to administer medications.

This program was developed in response to federal regulations which require that such personnel to complete a state-approved training course in medications and their administration. Individuals completing this course are eligible to take the Indiana state exam for qualification as a medication aide.

This course is recommended for individuals with Certified Nursing Assistant credentials who plan to pursue a career in health care. The Certified Nursing Assistant and Qualified Medication Aide programs are designed to prepare students with the coursework and clinical experience necessary to prepare them for certification through the Indiana State Department of Health.
