Enrollment Status Enrollment Verification In-School Defernment

Credit is described in semester hours, the number of credits taken per semester. The number of credits is determined by the demands of the course, course work and by the number of contact hours, the hours actually spent in the classroom or laboratory.

Enrollment status for the Fall and Spring semesters is determined by registered total semester credits:
Full-time student
12 or more credits
3/4 time student
9-11 credits
1/2 time student
6-8 credits
Less than 1/2 time
1-5 credits

For the Summer period, enrollment status for Title IV Financial Aid and for all other purposes is as follows:
  Financial Aid All Other Purposes
Full-time student
12 credits or more 6 credits or more
3/4 time student
9-11 credits 4-5 credits
1/2 time student
6-8 credits 3 credits
Less than 1/2 time
1-5 credits 1-2 credits

A credit hour represents one hour of lecture, or two hours of laboratory or three hours of clinical instruction per week for the semester. A three-credit-hour lecture course, for example, meets 48 hours during the semester (3 hours/week x 16 weeks). A class load of more than 17 credit hours requires approval of the Chief Academic Officer or a designee.

A first-year student, by definition, is one who has completed 30 or fewer semester credit hours. A second-year student is one who has completed 31 or more semester credit hours.

ENROLLMENT VERIFICATION

Enrollment verification provides proof of enrollment for a student's financial lender, insurance company, sponsor, etc. There is no fee for this service. This verification provides enrollment status only. It does not provide information on specific courses taken or grades received: courses and grades are shown only on your official transcript. Students may request enrollment verifications from the Office of the Registrar at either the NMC or Lawrence campuses. These requests may also be faxed to the Office of the Registrar at 317-921-4846 using the Enrollment Verification Request form.

Enrollment Verifications for current semesters will not be processed until after the 100% refund and will be processed within 5 business days of receipt.

DEFERMENT PROCEDURES

Student enrollment information is submitted to the National Student Clearinghouse (NCS) several times each semester. NSC, in turn, maintains the enrollment information and supplies the enrollment information to various loan agencies. The loan agencies use the student data obtained from NSC to determine if a student is eligible for a loan deferment. Each student has an enrollment status of one of the following: full-time, at least half-time, less than half-time, or withdrawn.

If the loan agency asks the student to submit a request for deferment form, the student should be able to obtain the form from the loan agency. Most large loan companies have web pages which allow the student to download forms as well as access their account information. The deferment request form should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar signed and dated after it has been read carefully.
