Ivy Tech is one college, but it operates across Indiana. Ivy Tech offers its programs of study within easy commuting distance for most citizens at 23 campuses and scores of off-campus sites. Because your work will contribute to the quality of Ivy Tech and to its students' learning experiences, it is important for you to know about the College statewide and how it meets its mission.

Ivy Tech was created by the Indiana General Assembly in 1963 to take its place with Indiana, Purdue, Ball State, Indiana State, Southern Indiana, and Vincennes universities as one of Indiana's seven public, post-high school educational institutions. As a public college, Ivy Tech is state-supported, which means a major portion of its funding is provided by appropriations from the Indiana General Assembly.

Ivy Tech's educational mission is to offer technical education to all Hoosiers. Therefore, the student body is made up of recent high school graduates, individuals who have not completed high school, former students of other colleges and universities who seek specific skill training, and adults needing retraining or additional training for current or future employment.

With these student groups in mind, the legislature specified that Ivy Tech develop a statewide system so that programs offered could meet local employment opportunities and so that working adults who could not afford the time or expenses of attending a residential campus could conveniently attend Ivy Tech classes.

Since its creation in 1963, Ivy Tech has succeeded in meeting the legislature's aspirations for the College to make quality technical education available to all Hoosiers. Ivy Tech will continue to keep pace with the dynamic technical and state environments by adding new programs, sites, and services as necessary. The College and its faculty and staff are proud to serve Indiana's technical education needs.
