Bob Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What is Bob?
A: Bob is a Unix server that students may use for posting homework, publishing web pages, and other related Ivy Tech school work. Bob is not to be used for any purpose not related to Ivy Tech. The standard array of Unix tools and services is offered.
Q: Who can use Bob?
A: Bob was intended for use by students and student organizations only. Student organizations must first get approval from the Dean of Student Affairs at their Ivy Tech campus. For more information, please reference the Bob disclaimer.
Q: How do I get an account?
A: Students may request a Bob account by filling out the online account sign-up form. After you submit the form, a regional Bob administrator will contact you to confirm the approval of your Bob account.
Q: I requested a Bob account but I have not received confirmation.
A: If you have not received a response to your account, please contact one of the regional Bob administrators at your campus.
Q: How do I log in to Bob?
A: After your account has been set up, you can log in to Bob through a command line interface such as MS-DOS. You will type telnet bob.ivytech.edu and then you will be prompted for your username and password. Please reference the Unix Help webpage for complete instructions.
Q: How do I store files in my Bob account?
A: You will FTP (file transfer protocol) your personal files onto the Bob server through the command line interface by typing ftp bob.ivytech.edu or by using WS_FTP. You will then be prompted to enter your username and password. Please reference the Unix Help webpage for complete instructions.
Q: What else can I do on the Bob server?
A: The standard array of Unix tools and services is offered:
- HTML, PHP, SSI, CGI, and Frontpage
- FTP access - store files and webpages easily
- Telnet and SSH access
- Send/Receive Email - you@bob.ivytech.edu
- Connect with Samba - map a network drive right to your home directory!
- Program in almost every modern language: Perl, C, C++, Java, Python, FORTRAN, Lisp, and more!
