The mail system features an integrated SPAM flagging for all incoming email unless it is sent from an ivytech.edu
email address. While we can't reject SPAM due to the possibility of losing legitimate mail, this flagging will
allow you to more easily filter and otherwise deal with SPAM. SPAM will still arrive “unflagged” and the
occasional “false-positive” (wanted email that isn't SPAM that was flagged as SPAM) will happen. For these
situations, the new mail system offers a more streamlined process of reporting both SPAM and Ham (mail that isn't
SPAM, but was tagged at SPAM and needs to be flagged as acceptable/wanted email).
- Two new “Public Folders” folders will appear in everyone's Web Mail account automatically:
- SPAM Can – To report SPAM, simply move the message into the “SPAM Can” folder.
- Ham Bone – To report Ham, simply move the message into the “Ham Bone” folder.
- Once an hour, these folders are automatically emptied by the system. Any messages found within are fed to the
system's internal database of what is considered SPAM and what is not (this “learning” process helps it to correctly
identify new mail in the future). If you are using an email client like Outlook, Eudora or Thunderbird on
campus and Web Mail/Squirrel Mail when away from campus, you will need to report SPAM by e-mailing the
header information at spam@lists.ivytech.edu.
- The system also offers a mechanism called “auto-whitelisting” that automatically pushes the flagging score of
an email toward either SPAM or Ham based on previously-recorded flagging scores for the sender of the message.
Thus, as a sender continues to send us email, we more accurately determine whether or not their message is
SPAM.
