Health Care Support

The Health Care Support program offers exciting opportunities for people who are considering entry into the health care field, as well as to current health care providers who want additional credentials or an Associate of Applied Science degree to complement their current skills. The program allows students to complete personal goals for attaining credentials required or preferred by employers in nearly all health care sectors - hospitals, long term care centers, ambulatory healthcare centers, physician practices, home care, and community services. Students may also complete the AAS degree, which offers courses relevant to many other health care professions, as well. WHY CHOOSE THE HEALTH CARE SUPPORT PROGRAM? As one of the largest industries in 2008, healthcare provided 14.3 million jobs for wage and salary workers. Many of the occupations projected to grow the fastest are in the healthcare industry. Three of the 20 fastest growing occupations fall under the healthcare support program. Employment in healthcare support occupations is projected to increase by 28.8 percent with a resulting increase of more than 1.1 million new jobs. As the number of older people continues to increase, growth will be driven by a greater demand for healthcare services. This increase in demand along with advances in medical technology and a shift from inpatient to less expensive, patient-favored outpatient and home health services will generate more new wage and salary jobs in healthcare than in any other industry. Both part-time and full-time employment opportunities in healthcare exist in every community, from the smallest, rural towns to the largest, metropolitan cities. Many healthcare facilities operate around the clock and need staff at all hours. Most of the occupations in the healthcare industry require less than four years of college, with experience, additional education or training, and specialty credentials providing opportunities for advancement in many healthcare occupations. This diversity creates many flexible, convenient, stable opportunities for employment with the potential for career growth.

HEALTH CARE SUPPORT CERTIFICATES Short-term certificates are sequences of technical and professional courses that are industry focused and designed for workforce preparation. They provide access to targeted, short-term training in a discipline, and completers may sit for specific certification exams. Courses in certificate programs also apply toward technical certificates and associate degree programs in the subject area. Availability varies by campus.
Certificates currently offered in this field are:
Electrocardiography Technician (21 credits) Completion of the Electrocardiography Technician Certificate leads to eligibility for certification examination through the National Healthcareer Association or Cardiovascular Credentialing International, employment and/or completion of an associate degree. Medical Office Administration (18 credits) Leads to a certification in Certified Medical Administrative Assistant (CMAA) by National Healthcareer Association (NHA), employment and/or completion of an associates degree. Program and Employment Information

Outpatient Insurance Coding (18 credits) Leads to a Certified Professional Coder-Apprentice (CPC-A) by the American Association of Profession Coders (AAPC), employment and/or completion of an associates degree. Program and Employment Information

Patient Care (19 credits) Completion of the Patient Care Certificate leads to eligibility for Indiana Certified Nurse Aide testing, Home Health Aide skill assessment, dementia care certification, and employment and/or completion of an associate degree. Program and Employment Information

Pharmacy Technician (21 credits) Completion of the Pharmacy Technician Certificate leads to eligibility for certification examination through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association, both Indiana State Board of Pharmacy recognized certification exams, employment, and/or completion of an associate degree. Program and Employment Information Ivy Tech Community College has been approved by the Indiana State Board as a provider of pharmacy technician training.

Phlebotomy Technician (17 credits) Completion of the Phlebotomy Technician Certificate leads to eligibility for certification examination through the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP), employment and/or completion of an associate degree. Program and Employment Information

Therapeutic Massage (26 credits) Completion of the Therapeutic Massage Certificate leads to eligibility for certification examination through the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodyworks (NCBTMB), employment and/or completion of an associate degree. ASSOCIATE OF APPLIED SCIENCE IN HEALTH CARE SUPPORT (Minimum of 60 credit hours)
The Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Health Care Support will give you the knowledge and skills for career entry or advancement in a current job. Associate of Applied Science degree programs are two-year programs that prepare students for careers, career changes and career advancement. Students who need to take longer to complete the degree because of job or family obligations can take the program over a longer period of time. AAS programs may also prepare students for transfer to four-year institutions. These programs offer education in recognized technical areas and specialties with emphasis on analysis, synthesis and evaluation. The program content, which is approximately 30% general education and 70% professional/technical, provides depth and breadth in conceptual and professional/technical skills. The general education courses equip students with the problem solving, communications, scientific and mathematical skills to compete successfully in the job market. Professional/technical courses equip students with the skills to obtain employment and to advance in the workforce. Health Care Support AAS Areas of Emphasis:
Clinical Support (Minimum of 60 Credit Hours) Graduates in the clinical support concentration will earn at least two certifications from the following areas: Certified Nursing Assistant, Dementia Care, Electrocardiography, Emergency Medical Technician, Home Health Aide, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomy, Qualified Medication Aide, Medical Administrative Assistant, and Certified Professional Coder. The combination of certifications will offer unique flexibility for students to meet the needs of employers in the current climate of change in the delivery of health care.

Therapeutic Massage (Minimum of 61 Credit Hours) The field of therapeutic massage is quickly evolving from a relatively new alternative medicine practice to a mainstream medical profession. This concentration prepares graduates to obtain both a national credential and state licensure for massage therapists, as required by Indiana law. Employment opportunities include private practice, chiropractor and physician offices, health clubs and spas, and manufacturing industries.
