After the tragic loss of their son Douglas, Alice and Dick Schleicher wanted to ensure his memory would touch future generations for decades to come. Douglas' love of athletics led them to establish the Douglas Schleicher Memorial Golf Scramble. And their admiration for Ivy Tech led them to name the College the event's beneficiary. "We felt it was appropriate because of his love for sports," Alice says. "We wanted to help raise funds for scholarships. Douglas loved helping people just like us. He would've loved to be a part of the event, enjoying a good game that would benefit others in our community." Ivy Tech Southern Indiana Chancellor Rita Hudson Shourds, Ph.D., says the College is honored to have the support of a family that has done so much to support their community. "Alice Schleicher is a true example of a philanthropist," Dr. Shourds states. "She's someone who's so giving. We're honored she has chosen to give our campus the benefit of her generosity." |

| During the past four years, the event has raised more than $30,000 from participant fees and sponsorships. The proceeds are used to fund scholarships for students who, like Douglas Schleicher when he was a student, do not start their College education directly after completing high school. Brandi Burton is a nursing student and recent Douglas Schleicher Scholarship recipient. She says her success might not have been possible if not for the Schleichers' generosity. | ||

"The Douglas Schleicher Scholarship has helped ease the financial burden of going to nursing school as a single mom," Brandi says. "I hope to make the Schleicher family proud by becoming a good nurse who contributes to the community." If you ask Alice Schleicher, students like Brandi are exactly who she and her husband had in mind when they established the scholarship and the golf scramble. She believes there is no better way to honor her son than by helping others. "It's very emotional to me, being part of such a great institution. I love to see students realizing their dreams." |
