Represents Largest Corporate Gift to Capital Campaign

Thanks to a $1.2 million gift from Steel Dynamics, the new technology building at Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast will be named after the company’s top executive.

It’s the largest corporate gift to Ivy Tech’s $6.5 million capital campaign. The Steel Dynamics Keith E. Busse Technology Center is scheduled to open for classes in January 2010.

Ivy Tech Chancellor Mark Keen announced the naming Friday, November 14, at the under-construction site.

“We’ve always said since the creation of this company that we wanted to be good corporate citizens,” said Busse, president and CEO of Steel Dynamics Foundation, Inc. “It’s nice to be in a position to give back.”

Steel Dynamics, Inc. (SDI), headquartered in Fort Wayne, Indiana, is one of the nation’s largest steel producers and one of the largest domestic metals collection and recycling operators. SDI operates five electric -arc furnace mini-mills, five joist and deck manufacturing plants and over 70 metals recycling locations. SDI currently employs about 7,000 individuals. Founded in 1993, SDI began production at its Butler, Ind., Flat Roll Mill in 1996. The company now operates five electric-furnace mini-mills with total steel production capacity expected to reach 6.7 million tons per year by 2009. SDI also operates a fabrication business, New Millennium Building Systems, which produces joists, girders, and decking for non-residential construction projects. The company also entered the metals recycling business through several acquisitions in late October 2007 and June 2008. The company pioneered new approaches by applying technological advances to the steel industry in the United States.

Ivy Tech’s 107,000-square-foot technology center will be on the college’s north campus on St. Joe Road and will house most of the academic programs in the School of Applied Sciences and Engineering Technology and the School of Technology.
