What is TRiO Student Support Services?

TRiO Student Support Services works with 160 contracted students at Ivy Tech Community College Northeast and provides students with a network of individualized, extensive services designed to enhance academic and personal development.

TRiO activities are free and exclusive to participants. If you are a student who has been away from school for some time, a brand new student who feels unprepared for college, or a student who is wondering if you can succeed, TRiO Student Support Services might be the right place for you.

TRiO Student Support Services is 100% funded through the United States Department of Education.

Who is eligible for TRiO Student Support Services?*

An applicant must be ANY of the following:

  • A first-generation college student (neither parent completed a four-year bachelor’s degree)
  • A low-income individual, according to Federal guidelines (In general, this means eligibility for a Pell Grant.)
  • An individual with a documented disability registered with Disability Support Services

The following criteria must also apply to ALL applicants:

  • Be a U.S. citizen or national; or eligible for Federal student aid.
  • Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment at Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast in addition to needing academic support to complete a college degree.
  • Be willing to graduate or transfer within three years and maintain a 2.0 GPA.

What does TRiO Student Support Services provide to participants?

 

Motivation and Encouragement: According to current TRiO students, TRiO’s most valuable service.

Personalized Education Planning: Participation in an assessment and goal-setting process creates an individualized Education Plan reviewed every semester with feedback provided.

Regular Advising and Personal Problem Solving: Continuous advising for academic and life purposes in regards to degree programs, financial aid, community services, etc.

Tutoring: More than 50 hours of weekly, walk-in tutoring provided every semester in the TRiO Resource Center, an exclusive computer lab, and the Ivy Tech-Rudisill Center.

Online Communication: An online Blackboard community provides 24/7 access with  up-to-date information and resources.

Extracurricular and Cultural Events: Participation is encouraged in campus organizations like Phi Theta Kappa and Student Government. Free tickets provided to local community productions.

Personal Mentoring: Available option to be matched with a faculty or staff mentor who provides an extra layer of support, role modeling, and coaching.

Workshop Seminars: Over thirty workshop seminars conducted every semester, including budgeting, note-taking, overcoming test anxiety, navigating financial aid, problem solving, time management, quick cooking tips, healthy personal relationships, and more.

Computer Loans: Provided the option of checking out a laptop for a three- or four-day period.

Monthly Newsletter: E-mailed and mailed each month with information, study tips, guidance, and important news and deadlines.

What is TRiO Student Support Services' success rate?

Nationally, students in TRiO SSS are more than twice as likely to remain in college than those students from similar backgrounds who did not participate in the program.

How do I apply for TRiO Student Support Services?

TRiO is constantly accepting applicants, both new students and those closer to graduation. A student who wants to succeed may apply at any time by completing an application. Contact the program office by calling, e-mailing, or stopping by.

As a TRiO participant, what will be expected of me?

TRiO is a free program for those who are eligible. Time commitments are minimal. The only “cost” is the dedication to your own success.

Here’s what to expect:

  • Upon acceptance into the program, sign a contractconfirming commitment to program requirements
  • Inform TRiO staff of progress and maintain regular communication
  • Seek assistance early and attend TRiO functions with peers
  • Participate in at least two services per semester
