Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne
Undecided Students

If you are undecided about which program or major you intend to pursue, you are not alone! Nationwide, as many as 75 percent of students enter college as undecided. This number includes students who initially declare a major program and change it later. In order to make an informed decision, there are three steps you should take.

  1. Self assessment. Discover who you are, what your career "type" is, and what you value in a program/career. Clearly define your skills, interests, and values and relate them to possible programs/careers. Ivy Tech offers Choices, a free career assessment, to help you with this step. Complete Choices online.
  2. Program/Career Exploration. Once you have defined your interests, skills, and values, find out about the related programs offered at Ivy Tech.
  3. Program/Career Decision-Making. Now that you know about various programs you are interested in, it's time to make a decision.
  4. Contact Career Services.

Remember, many people change their minds even after they have made a decision on a program/career. Try to match these famous people to their undergraduate college majors:

1. Colin Powell, former Secretary of State

a. Political Science

2. Bill Cosby, actor and comedian

b. Physical Education

3. Katie Couric, television journalist

c. Geology

4. Willard Scott, television weather forecaster

d. Religious Studies

5. Mia Hamm, professional soccer player

e. American Studies

Are you surprised? Many employers are looking for employees with transferable skills, not necessarily a specific type of degree. A college education is the best way to demonstrate you have obtained these skills. In addition, Ivy Tech offers many opportunities to transfer to four-year institutions to further your education if you choose to pursue a different field or higher degree in the future.
