Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne
Frequently Asked Questions

What is a semester?

A semester is a designated length of time in which classes take place. There are three semesters per year at Ivy Tech: Summer, Fall, and Spring. Fall and Spring semesters are 16 weeks long; Summer semester is 10 weeks long.

What is a credit/credit hour?

"Credit" and "credit hour" mean the same thing. A credit designates the approximate amount of time spent in class per week. For example, a 3 credit class typically meets for 3 hours each week. Most Ivy Tech classes are worth 3 credits.

How many classes should I take?

A good rule of thumb is to plan on 10 hours per week (both in-class and study time) for each class. So, full time status-or 4 classes-is like having a full-time, 40 hour-per-week job.

To complete an Associate degree in two years, you should plan to take five (5) classes (or 15 credit hours) a semester.

What types of Certificates or Degrees can I earn?

There are four types of certificates and degrees offered at Ivy Tech:

  • The Career Development Certificate develops specific competencies for careers.
  • The Technical Certificate develops technical and general skills for specific occupations.
  • The Associate of Science degree is primarily designed for transfer into 4-year institutions.
  • The Associate of Applied Science degree is primarily used for career preparation, advancement, and/or change.

What do my assessment test results mean?

Your advisor will tell you what, if any, review classes you will need based on your assessment test results.
