SLA Collecting Items for Children's Hope House
The Student Leadership Academy, in conjunction with their service learning project, is seeking donations to support the Mad Anthony's Children's Hope House.
The mission of Children's Hope House is to offer temporary lodging to parents and families receiving medical care away from home. It is located within the Lutheran Hospital complex on Jefferson.
Donations will be accepted through March 19, 2008. Look for the boxes and posters located at all campuses to place your donations. Donations needed for the Hope House include any non-perishable canned food items, paper and plastic ware, cleaning and laundry supplies. Gift cards and monetary donations are also accepted, and they will be used to purchase the items that were not donated. If you decide to donate in this fashion, please do not place in the collection boxes, but deliver directly to the SLA Advisor, Angie Evans, in room 1262. A complete list of items needed can be found at the website: www.childrenshopefw.org.
For more information, please contact Angie Evans by email, aevans@ivytech.edu.
Your donations are greatly appreciated.
PTK Keeping Busy
Over winter break, Phi Theta Kappa elected a new slate of officers for 2008.
These officers have a busy spring ahead. Eight officers and members of our local PTK chapter will be heading to the Regional Convention in Madison, IN at the end of February. At the Convention, two of our officers will be campaigning for regional offices. Susan Waldeck is running for Regional President, and Jennifer Marquart is running for Regional Public Relations Officer. In April, representatives from Ivy Tech Northeast will head to Philadelphia for the International Convention.
On campus this spring this group will be heading up several PTK activities, including bringing a team of Ivy Tech walkers to the Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. If you want to keep up with the activities of PTK, check out their brand new website at WeAreSmartiePants.org.
Thank You for Your Kindness
To the Staff and Students at
Ivy Tech:
I would like to extend
a huge thank you to all the
staff and students at Ivy Tech
for opening your hearts to my
family and me this past
December in our time of need.
Thank you for helping
us turn a horrible moment in
our lives into one that showed
us that there are many very caring
and compassionate people.
I would like to send
out a special thank you to
everyone in the Respiratory
Care program - both staff and
students - who helped us out
by giving us basic needs the
same day. All the blankets, pillows,
towels, and toiletries
didn't just give us our daily
necessities but gave us the
confidence we needed to feel
like we could overcome everything.
That means more to us
than any other material possession
that we lost.
Thank you from the bottom of
our hearts.
Love and God Bless,
The Satterthwaite Family
Spring Break Dates
Mark your calendars - Spring break is March 10-15. The 2007-08 Student Planners accidentally stated that spring break covered two weeks, please remember that this was a misprint and make sure you have the correct dates. While you're at your calendar, also remember that Daylight Savings time begins on Sunday, March 9. Don't forget to spring your clock forward one hour.

We can tell you how
much we offer, but why not
listen to what TRiO student
Arin Stevenson has to say
about her involvement with
TRiO?
Hello, my name is Arin
Stevenson. I have been a
TRiO student for almost two
years. Being in the program
has benefited me in many
ways:
UNDERSTANDING and
TRUSTWORTHY
The TRIO staff has
stuck by my side through
everything from family issues
to school-related problems.
They are very understanding
of your problems and will try
to see both sides of a matter
without judging you. I have
had many meetings with Tim
(the Director) to talk to him
about how things are going in
my life, and if I tell him something
confidential, he keeps it
that way. The TRiO staff has
honestly become a second
family to me, and I am very
thankful to have them in my
life.
HELPFUL
Another reason I'm
very glad I'm in the program is
that nobody ever went to college
in my family. I honestly
can say that if I wasn't in the
TRiO program, I would be
super lost. They help with
every question from simple to
more complicated. They help
provide me with tutoring to
keep my grades up, and even
if you need to talk or a shoulder
to cry on, they are there.
Since I have been in college, I
have changed my major from
nursing to office administration
and then back to nursing.
Through that time, they have
never questioned my actions
or doubted me. All they have
done is support me.
BELIEVE IN ME
As a student
and person, I have
many self-confidence
problems. I know it's
common as a student,
but being in the
TRiO family has
helped me to build a
little more. I have to
thank Tim for telling
me, "You can do it"
most of the time I see
him. I have great
grades and a great
GPA, but always in
the back of my mind,
I ask, "Can I really do
it?" Having TRiO to
believe in me means
a lot. The thought of
them believing in me
keeps me going. They are truly
a good thing in my life.
There are a couple
more reasons why I believe
the TRiO program has been
the best thing I ever decided
to join. I really would recommend
students joining and
putting your trust in them so
you can see how warm, trustworthy,
and welcoming they
are!

GradFEST 2008
GradFest 2008 is on its way! On Wednesday, April 2, we'll be celebrating graduates in every corner of the building. From making graduation plans and ordering your cap and gown, to looking ahead at the transfer fair, GradFest is your one stop shop for graduation and beyond.
Over the lunch hour the Culinary students will be serving our annual Etiquette Luncheon. Enjoy a gourmet four-course meal while watching a presentation on etiquette. The etiquette presentation covers more than what fork to use or how to shake hands--our speaker gives many hints about how to feel at ease and make a good impression in business situations. Space is limited, so call the Student Life Office (481-2232) to make your reservations.
What comes next after graduation? Four-year college representatives will be on campus recruiting transfer students. Our advising staff will be offering workshops in post-graduation topics, from writing your resume to repaying those student loans. Workshops are still being scheduled, so watch for fliers advertising times and places.
Finally, remember to stop by the Crescent Commons in the afternoon for a cake and punch reception for graduates. Nearby you'll be able to order your cap and gown, and purchase graduation announcements, and other gear showing off your Ivy Tech pride. You've worked hard, you deserve a little break as you move into the final stretch before the finish line!
How to Succeed in College at a
Community College
It's the end of Week 2 and I'm just now beginning to breathe. My students are beginning to settle into the routine required for my classes. They are beginning to understand how I use the textbook, how I present information, what I expect in the way of classroom conduct, and more importantly, how I test. They are getting to know me and I am getting to know them.
- Read the Textbook & handouts
- Pay Attention to Boxed
Information
- Attendance - Show Up!
- Talk to Your Instructor About
Your Concerns
- Keep in Mind College is
Different from High School
- See a Tutor
- Be Proactive. Seek help.
College is a wonderful opportunity to grow professionally and socially. Make the college your college. Get involved in student organizations. Make some new friends. Gain some new experiences. Start a new life. But...don't forget what you came to college for. You want to build a better life for you and your family. You have dreams you want to come true. You have plans for your future. Those plans, those dreams, that better life starts right here, right now. Week 2 - Get to know the teacher. Read the textbook. Study the notes. Show up in class. See the tutor. Get involved.
MSO Celebrates Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
On January 17, 2008, The Multicultural Student Organization (MSO) celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with their annul event "Celebrating the Dream." About 300 people attended the program and reception. We had a great turn out, with faculty, staff, and students and local community groups in attendance.
There were several schools included in the Program. Six students from South Side High School, 25 students from Prince Chapman Middle School and 38 students from Irwin Elementary school participated in this event. The students were excellent. There were poetry readings and short narratives all written and read by students. The students from Irwin Elementary entered their own school contest and the best poems and narratives were selected to be read during the program. It was wonderful to hear the expressions and thoughts of what the "Dream" means to them. There were several musical selections, as well as musical selection in sign language; poems in both English and Spanish were read.
The organization also had the opportunity to introduce the new MLK Club President, Mr. Bennie Edwards and Keynote Speaker, Ruby Cain. It was quite an event.
The Multicultural Student Organization sends special thanks to everyone who participated in the program, especially, the local community schools and other agencies that helped make the program a success.
Watch the monitors and future publications for the next cultural activity sponsored by the Multicultural Students' Organization.
If you are interested in joining the Multicultural Student Organization, please contact Diana Jackson at 480-4115 or djackson@ivytech.edu.
