Ivy Tech Community College Fort Wayne
Smoke-Free Campus
Tobacco-Free Campus Policy

Effective November 19, 2009

In order to foster a healthy, safe, and clean learning and working environment, Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast is proud to announce that we will be tobacco-free effective November 19, 2009.

Under the new policy, the use or sale of any tobacco products is prohibited on college-owned, operated, or leased property or vehicles at any time. Smoking in personal vehicles, however, is allowed.  The policy extends to all college property.

All employees and students share in the responsibility for adhering to and enforcing the policy. Employees or students who are found in violation of this policy are subject to disciplinary procedures up to and including termination. If you see someone violating the policy, it is your responsibility to remind that person that smoking is not allowed on campus except in personal vehicles.

There are nicotine replacement and smoking cessation programs available to benefits-eligible employees. See details on the Employee Services tab of Campus Connect under Wellness.

Enforcement of the Policy is as follows:

  1. Remind the person that smoking is allowed only in personal vehicles. If your reminder isn’t successful then,
  2. Notify a Security Desk Clerk of the violation. The Security Desk Clerk is located inside the main entrance of the Coliseum Campus and Harshman Hall on the North Campus. The Desk Clerk will ask you if you reminded the person of the policy. If you did, and if necessary,
  3. A Security Officer will be dispatched. Human Resources and Student Affairs will be notified for follow-up if an officer is dispatched.
  4. Appropriate disciplinary action taken.

The success of this policy will depend upon the thoughtfulness, consideration, and cooperation of smokers and nonsmokers.
