ASA Reading Courses at Ivy Tech:

ENG 031 - Reading Strategies for College I (3 Cr.)

Prerequisite: Demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment.

Increases performance in reading flexibility, vocabulary, and comprehension. Introduces critical reading skills and study strategies as well as their applications.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Identify main ideas and summarize articles read.
  2. Recall and differentiate major and minor details of material read.
  3. Draw appropriate inferences from what is read.
  4. Distinguish fact from opinion.
  5. Improve recognition, pronunciation and use of vocabulary.
  6. Demonstrate effective use of word analysis and context clues to define unfamiliar terms.
  7. Demonstrate appropriate use of reference materials such as dictionary, thesaurus, and computer aids.
  8. Increase reading flexibility and effectiveness.
  9. Establish a systematized approach to reading and study.
  10. Apply integrated reading strategies to understand diverse materials.

 

ENG 032 - Reading Strategies for College II (3 Cr.)

Prerequisite: Successfully completed ENG 031 with a "C" or higher, or demonstrated competency through appropriate assessment.

Advances performance in reading flexibility, vocabulary, and comprehension. Emphasizes critical reading and strategies for effective college study.

MAJOR COURSE LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:

  1. Summarize main ideas and identify supporting details.
  2. Identify patterns of organization in a reading passage.
  3. Draw appropriate inferences from what is read.
  4. Distinguish fact from opinion.
  5. Identify author's purpose, tone, and bias.
  6. Distinguish between literal and figurative language.
  7. Expand vocabulary and usage with emphasis on recognizing connotation.
  8. Read with increased flexibility and effectiveness.
  9. Systematically build personal and academic vocabularies.
  10. Apply basic research skills.
  11. Apply integrated reading strategies to collegiate reading materials.
