English as a Second Language (ESL) courses at Ivy Tech:
ENG 002 - Intermediate English as a Second Language(3 Cr.)
Prerequisite: Score on English placement test between 36 and 52, inclusive
Emphasizes writing, reading and speaking with increasing competence in academic and social situations.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Write sentences within familiar academic areas and be able to organize a narrative paragraph.
- Read and understand most expository materials with regular use of an all-English college dictionary.
- Understand most informal questions, statements, and conversation at normal speed and comprehend lectures on familiar subjects.
- Participate effectively, sometimes hesitatingly, in social and academic conversations.
- Actively use grammar skills and progressive forms of present, past, and future tenses.
ENG 003 - Pre-Academic English as a Second Language (3 Cr.)
Prerequisite: Score on English placement tests between 53 and 68, inclusive, or successful completion of ENG 002, with a grade of "C" or higher.
Emphasizes paragraph organization, reading and understanding expository and academic materials through vocabulary development. Develops comprehension of social and academic conversations and lectures.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Organize an expository essay of two to five paragraphs.
- Read and understand general expository material and text and extract important elements.
- Understand conversations and lectures on familiar and lecture subjects.
- Participate in social and academic conversations with correct usage of idioms and structures.
- Actively use compound and complex structures and perfect tenses.
ENG 004 - Academic English as a Second Language (3 Cr.)
Prerequisite: Score on English placement test between 69 and 83, inclusive, or successful completion of ENG 003 with a grade of "C" or higher.
Emphasizes expository writing, finding main ideas and details in academic texts, and understanding and speaking in academic settings.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
- Write expository and argumentative essays with good control of organization.
- Extract key information from academic material.
- Speak fluently with only occasional misuse of idioms.
- Understand academic and colloquial language.
- Actively control grammar, punctuation, and spelling in all writing.
ENG 013 - English as a Second Language – Listening and Speaking I (3 Cr.)
Prerequisite: Score on English placement test of at least 40.
Emphasizes listening and speaking strategies for comprehensive input. Provides practice recognizing and producing speech patterns of American English. Allows for conversational practice on topics of cultural values and behaviors.
Course Objectives: Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be expected to
- Understand conversations on familiar and practical topics.
- Participate in social conversations with general understanding of idioms and structures.
- Gain a broader working understanding of facets of American culture.
- Gain familiarity with and understanding of a general college vocabulary
