Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast Announces
Elementary Education Articulation Transfer Agreement with IPFW

Ivy Tech Community College-Northeast and Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) have completed an articulation agreement for Elementary Education, providing a more seamless transfer process between Ivy Tech’s campuses throughout the state and IPFW. Students, who follow the prescribed coursework at Ivy Tech for an Associate of Science in Education with an Elementary concentration, will be able to apply to IPFW’s School of Education in the Department of Educational Studies to complete their Elementary Education teaching degree. Students may opt to take additional classes at IPFW to add other areas of licensure and increase their marketability.

The curriculum in the first two years at Ivy Tech includes 40 credits of General Education requirements and 22 Professional Educational Core credits that establish the foundation for pre-service teachers. IPFW provides students with a variety of in-depth teacher preparation classes and awards a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education as the culminating degree.

Students will be required to purchase and maintain an electronic portfolio at Ivy Tech, contributing various assignments and samples of their work, and presenting their portfolio to IPFW when they transfer. In addition, students will need to meet IPFW’s grade point average requirements, pass all three portions of the Praxis I/PPST with at least minimum scores, and apply for admission to IPFW and the School of Education before beginning the Elementary Education program at IPFW.

“This agreement is exciting for students in Fort Wayne, as they will now be able to literally cross the street to IPFW and continue on to complete a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education,” said Laurie Johnson, program chair for the School of Education at Ivy Tech. “IPFW also offers other options to students who prefer to teach middle or high school. They also can provide coursework that leads to licensing in Mild Intervention (special education) and English as a Second Language”

For more information on this agreement, contact Laurie Johnson, program chair for the School of Education at Ivy Tech-Northeast, 260-480-2244 or e-mail laujohns@ivytech.edu; or Ann Brown, Crossroads coordinator for Ivy Tech and IPFW at crossroads@ipfw.edu.
