About Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana - Northeast
Like other Ivy Tech campuses, the Fort Wayne facility offers a wide range of programs through a curriculum keyed to flexibility. As needs change, so do the programs. New courses are constantly being added in response to requests by prospective students and employers. Simultaneously, existing courses change as technologies develop. Consequently, Ivy Tech in Northeast Indiana increased its enrollment from 131 students enrolled in three programs, in August 1969 when the College opened its doors, to approximately 4,000 students enrolled in 24 programs and 66 specialties in 1998.
Ivy Tech Northeast grew so rapidly in its early years that the Indiana State Legislature authorized the construction of new facilities designed to fill the ever increasing needs of Northeastern Indiana. A 40,000 square foot building with classroom, laboratory, workshop and office space, was completed in October, 1976.
This failed to cover increasing demand, and an adjoining structure of the same size was completed in the Spring of 1981. The Fort Wayne Campus nearly doubled in size with the construction of a third building a 110,000 square foot structure with the latest in state-of-the-art facilities and equipment.
Most recently, in November 2003, a new phase of construction began on a new North Campus facility. By 2008, it is anticipated that the new North Campus will boast a Technology Center larger than the current Main Campus structure, housing many of the Technology Division programs.
Statewide, Ivy Tech is governed by a thirteen member Board of Trustees appointed by the Governor. Under terms of the legislation, the members represent various economic interests: manufacturing, commerce, labor, agriculture, education, and the public at large. This Board appoints the President of the statewide College. In addition, Ivy Tech, Fort Wayne, like the other regional campuses, has its own seven-member Board of Trustees, whose members also represent varied interests. The State Board appoints these members with the aim of keeping the Fort Wayne campus in touch with local needs. The Fort Wayne Region is administered by Chancellor Mark A. Keen
