Dual Credit Policy
Academic Year 2007-2008
Secondary-based dual credit is defined as simultaneously earning high school and Ivy Tech credit for coursework taught in a secondary school by secondary faculty. The secondary-level coursework may be comprised of a course or sequences of courses. The student is in dual credit status and both high school credit and Ivy Tech credit are awarded during the semester in which mastery of the subject matter is achieved.
A dual credit agreement can be reached only after secondary faculty and Ivy Tech faculty have met and reviewed course competencies and outlines for the course (or sequence of courses).
Course Content
Faculty must work together to assure that the course meets Ivy Tech requirements for content, level of learning, comparability of textbooks, equipment, and assessment of course competencies. Technical and general education courses are appropriate for awarding dual credit.
Basic skills advancement courses are not appropriate for dual credit.
Tuition
High school students taking a dual credit course taught by a secondary instructor are not charged tuition.
Eligibility
High school students can earn dual credit for coursework completed in the eleventh and twelfth grades.
Amount of secondary-based dual credit
A student may earn and apply toward a degree program up to 15 credit hours in college coursework.
Prerequisites
Student readiness measures and course prerequisites must be met for dual credit courses.
Faculty Credentials
Secondary faculty teaching a technical course for dual credit must meet the faculty credential requirements of the Indiana Professional Standards Board. Secondary faculty teaching a general education course for dual credit must meet the credential requirements of the Indiana Professional Standards Board and of Ivy Tech.
Dual credit and relationship to degree requirements
Dual credit coursework must apply toward a one- or two-year college degree program offered at the Ivy Tech campus with which the agreement exists.
Mutual agreements
Individual secondary schools and the local Ivy Tech campuses must prepare and sign a formal memorandum of understanding for each dual credit course.
Faculty development
As part of the agreement, the faculty of the secondary school and Ivy Tech agree to collaborate and participate in staff development prior to conducting the class, and to participate on an annual basis in program evaluation and staff development. Regions may elect to appoint secondary faculty as non-paid, adjunct Ivy Tech faculty.
Enrollment status, grades, and relation to dual credit
Dual credit students are to be enrolled as courses-only students. Enrollment for dual credit is not automatic upon enrollment in a secondary course covered by a dual credit agreement. Students must choose to enroll for the dual credit option, and must submit a signed course reservation form to enroll at the beginning of the semester as a dual credit student. Students must earn a grade of "C" or better in the course (or sequence of courses, culminating in mastery) to receive credit at Ivy Tech. The credit will be awarded upon notification from the secondary school that the student has earned the required grade. Students who enroll in a dual credit course and are not earning a grade of "C" or better should drop the course by the published date for Last Day to Withdraw without academic penalty.
Ivy Tech Based Dual Credit
A school corporation may elect to send secondary students to an Ivy Tech campus for coursework, or may elect to invite Ivy Tech faculty members to teach an Ivy Tech course to high school students at a secondary facility, or Ivy Tech may be providing financial support for a high school instructor. These also are dual credit if the student is simultaneously earning high school and Ivy Tech credit. In these cases, students must be charged tuition, and are subject to the College's policies and procedures that apply to non dual-credit students.
