Ivy Tech Community College honors Evansville professor for excellence in instruction
INDIANAPOLIS - Ivy Tech Community College Professor Karen Welte Gore has been selected to receive the 2008 Glenn Sample Award for Excellence in Instruction, Ivy Tech's highest honor for teaching excellence.

Gore received the award and recognition from Ivy Tech President Thomas J. Snyder and Joan McNagny, a member of the Ivy Tech Foundation Board of Directors, at a luncheon ceremony today at The Marriott East in Indianapolis.  The Glenn W. Sample Award is funded through Ivy Tech Foundation, Inc. by the generous gifts of Joan and Bill McNagny.

The recipient of the Sample Award, which has been awarded since 1983, is selected from a pool of 14 President's Award honorees. Each of Ivy Tech Community College's 14 regions nominate a faculty member for the President's award, which recognizes excellence in carrying out the College's mission and impacting the lives of students, their campuses and their communities.

Gore, a Professor of Business Administration at Ivy Tech's Evansville campus, has been with Ivy Tech for 15 years and says she is not satisfied repeating the same old lesson plans each semester.   If something in her plan does not go smoothly, she chooses to immediately revise it.

“Karen is a professor that sets the bar high for her students and will help and encourage them to achieve their personal educational goals,” said Jean Powers, an associate professor of business at the Evansville campus.  “Karen is a role model for all who teach at Ivy Tech Community College.”

Just as her students have their own objectives for success, Gore too has set teaching goals for herself to ensure that she continually incorporates new technology and concepts.  After she found herself teaching more traditional students, she saw a need to educate herself on their unique learning styles.  She plans to develop methodologies to better connect with her younger students who are immersed in electronic media.

However, the internet is not a new subject for Gore.  She has been a leader in developing Internet and hybrid courses and taught some of the first online courses offered by Ivy Tech.
