Ivy Tech Community College president, Gerald Lamkin, presented Ivy Tech Community College faculty members with the President’s Award for Excellence in Instruction at an awards ceremony held yesterday in Indianapolis.

The honor, which has been awarded since 1983, is presented to one faculty member from each of Ivy Tech Community College’s 14 regions and recognizes excellence in carrying out the college’s mission and impacting the lives of students, their campuses and their communities. Nominations for the award were submitted by Ivy Tech Community College students, faculty and staff.

The recipient of the 2006 President’s Awards for the Evansville campus was:

Janette Weiss, Department Chair for Mathematics, Evansville campus. Weis, who joined Ivy Tech in 1988, says that she builds her students’ confidence by “listening to their ideas, accepting their mistakes and praising their attempts.”  She strives to get students excited about learning. One of her favorite classroom exercises is to have students mix two different kinds of candy, calculate the cost of the new mixture and of course eat the results!
