History

In 1963, the Indiana General Assembly established Indiana Vocational Technical College as Indiana's first statewide vocational technical college. The North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (NCA) granted correspondence status to the Indianapolis, South Bend and Terre Haute regions in 1970. In 1994, the College requested and received NCA accreditation as a single institution.

In 1995, the Indiana General Assembly changed the name of the school to Ivy Tech State College. In 2005, Senate Enrolled Act 296 was passed by the state legislature, and the college's name changed to reflect its role as Indiana's statewide community college system- Ivy Tech Community College. The State Board of Trustees appointed Thomas J. Snyder as the seventh president of Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana in July 2007.

Ivy Tech's growth in its relatively short history has been impressive. Statewide, the College had only 3,233 students in the fall of 1968. Enrollment in 2004-2005 reached over 100,000. Within the state-wide Ivy Tech system, more than 4,800 full- and part-time faculty members teach in the program areas offered in six instructional divisions: Business, General Education , Health Sciences, Public Services, Technology, and Arts and Design. Ivy Tech's regional Corporate and Continuing Education Services staff works closely with Indiana businesses to offer customized training, re-training and continuing education in response to specific company needs. These training programs are available at Ivy Tech or in-plant. The College has campuses in twenty-three communities in Indiana and offers courses in over 60 other communities.
