It's Real! Ivy Tech Officially Named Indiana's Community College System
The long-awaited news is here! On May 4, Governor Mitch Daniels signed the bill that makes Ivy Tech Indiana 's community college system.
Senate Enrolled Act 296 formalizes last year's agreement for Ivy Tech to assume sole responsibility for the community college. Then-Governor Joseph Kernan announced a plan to expand the community college to all Ivy Tech campuses and to end the partnership with Vincennes University . Later, the Ivy Tech and VU trustees approved a joint resolution supporting the plan.
The new bill holds several key provisions which become effective July 1, 2005 .
Enhanced mission Ivy Tech has always focused on helping students and workers gain the skills they need to succeed in the workplace. SEA 296 reinforces the College's leadership role in educating the state's workforce and broadens Ivy Tech's mission to include elements ordinarily associated with a comprehensive community college.
Soon Ivy Tech will provide students with more opportunities by expanding transferable technical and professional offerings and adding liberal arts courses and degrees. This wider array of educational options will help Indiana attain greater participation in higher education and is expected to increase the percentage of Hoosiers holding college degrees.
Name change In keeping with the College's expanded mission, Ivy Tech's official name will change from "Ivy Tech State College" to "Ivy Tech Community College of Indiana."
Amended statute SEA 296 also amends the current statute for the community college (IC 20-12-75 ) to formally end the Ivy Tech-Vincennes University partnership. The new law provides that the state's community college system consists of Ivy Tech's campuses and instructional sites and the various courses, programs and services the College provides throughout Indiana .
