Tune-In to Ivy Tech
Ivy Tech Community College East Central has entered the realm of podcasting with the launching of its first broadcast on its website at www.ivytech.edu/eastcentral.
The first in the series of podcasts provides listeners an introduction to podcasting and a preview of the downloadable programs that will be available on the website. A new podcast will be launched each Wednesday.
The Ivy Tech podcasts will provide student profiles as well as explore valuable admissions and registration information and give reports on new services, programs and campus activities at Ivy Tech East Central, which includes Anderson, Marion and Muncie campuses and outreach sites in New Castle, Portland, Hartford City, Winchester, Elwood and Pendleton.
“We are very excited to be able to offer this new communications tool to the East Central Indiana community,” said Gail Chesterfield, acting chancellor for Ivy Tech East Central. “It is important for us to make information about the college and our programs and services as accessible to the public as possible.”
Any visitor to Ivy Tech’s website will be able to access the podcasts. Individuals can download the podcast directly as an mp3 file, automate the process by using such programs as iPodder that automatically communicates when a new podcast is available for download, or subscribe through iTunes at no cost.
Upcoming podcast topics include the Muncie campus’s new Academic Support Center, profile of an Ivy Tech student, financial aid and the Student Government Association.
“We also see podcasting playing an important role in instruction,” said Chesterfield.
The College plans to make podcasting available to instructors, who can record portions of classroom lectures and have the audio files available to students for downloading to their portal audio players or desktop computers. Instructors teaching online classes can record lectures, etc. and incorporate them into the class. This may be especially beneficial in courses like medical terminology, foreign languages.
Plans are also in the works to incorporate podcasting into the College’s Disability Support Services/Academic Support Center. Students with accessible needs can use a podcast recording for instructions on materials used in labs, audio files of textbooks or classroom instructions. Virtually any information that would help the student succeed would be available to that student. The student can hear this production through an iPod, MP3 player or even through their computer.
Ivy Tech has a history of being on the cutting edge of communications technology. As the first users of the IHETS ATM videoconference network, the Muncie, Anderson and Marion campuses led the way into a new medium for higher education in the state of Indiana. “As Ivy Tech’s first region to incorporate podcasting we continue to demonstrate our forward thinking in this area,” said Chesterfield.
The podcasts are a collaborative effort of the Marketing and Communications, Student Affairs and Disability Services Departments.
