Ivy Tech presents Georgia State Representative Alisha Thomas Morgan
Georgia State Representative Alisha Thomas Morgan will bring her message of 21st Century Activism to Muncie and Ivy Tech Community College on Monday, February 27, as part of the community’s Black History Month activities.

Morgan will address college students and community members at 9:30 a.m. in rooms 531/533 of the North Instructional Center on the Muncie Ivy Tech campus, 4301 S. Cowan Road. The public is invited.

At age 27, Rep. Morgan is the youngest serving member of the Georgia General Assembly and the first African-American to serve in the Georgia House of Representatives from Cobb County. She has already made her mark by standing up to the Sons of the Confederate Veterans and working to make major changes in the way young people are treated in the Georgia penal system. She continues to work on behalf of young people through education and health care issues and bringing what she calls real people into the political process.

Rep. Morgan has a BA degree in sociology and drama from Spelman College. In college, she started the Niamani Project which aims to develop self esteem and leaderships skills of youth by using the arts to address social issues. Upon graduation, Morgan worked as the southern regional organizer for the Alliance for Justice. In this capacity, she worked to train high school students in community organizing to help them create a voice for themselves and work to stop gun violence in their communities.

Morgan has received several leadership awards and honors from the NAACP as well as recognitions from the Concerned Black Clergy, Anti-Defamation League, and Cobb County Association of Educators. She was selected Freshman Legislator of the Year by the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus in 2003.

For the past several years, the East Central Region of Ivy Tech has worked with the schools in its regions to bring a well-known motivational speaker to the area for a presentation to students and the community during Black History Month. Last year, the College brought award-winning journalist, historian, producer, and publisher, Janus Adams, to Marion High School, and in 2004, Morris Dees, noted civil rights activist and founder of the Southern Poverty Law Center in Atlanta, GA, to the Anderson Wigwam Auditorium. In 2000, Martin Luther King III addressed students at the Muncie Fieldhouse.
